Job Description:

The Sustainment Engineer Specialist provides technical expertise in evaluating, analyzing, and resolving nonconforming conditions on aircraft systems and components within production, maintenance, and repair environments. This midlevel role applies proficient mechanical or aerospace engineering principles to assess discrepant hardware, develop corrective actions, and generate clear, traceable MRB engineering dispositions in compliance with program, regulatory, and airworthiness requirements.

The Sustainment Engineer Specialist works closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Design Engineering, and Program teams to maintain production flow, ensure structural and functional integrity, and support aircraft sustainment and delivery. The role leads technical troubleshooting, supports root cause and corrective action activities, and drives the implementation of robust engineering solutions for recurring production issues. Essential Functions:

  • Apply critical thinking, proactive learning, and engineering problemsolving skills to evaluate nonconforming conditions and determine appropriate engineering dispositions.
  • Review and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, models, tolerances, and technical documentation to support MRB decisionmaking.
  • Generate clear, concise, and technically sound MRB dispositions, including rework instructions, repair solutions, and technical justifications.
  • Collaborate with crossfunctional teams (Manufacturing, Quality, Design Engineering, Supply Chain) to resolve production issues and maintain workflow efficiency.
  • Conduct or support root cause analysis and corrective action initiatives related to nonconformances and recurring production problems.
  • Communicate effectively across engineering and production teams using strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and technical leadership to junior engineers, demonstrating maturity, technical proficiency, and effective teamwork.
  • Support offshift or overtime work as required to meet program schedules and aircraft delivery commitments.
  • Navigate and work within aircraft hangars, flight lines, and manufacturing facilities; must be able to board and exit aircraft, including maneuvering in restricted areas such as wings, fuselage compartments, and fuel tanks using appropriate safety gear.
  • Ensure all MRB activities comply with engineering standards, airworthiness requirements, and applicable certification frameworks.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, traceability, and records of MRB actions in accordance with quality and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficient knowledge of engineering fundamentals, manufacturing processes, material properties, and engineering documentation practices.
  • Ability to interpret and work from engineering drawings, specifications, tolerances, and technical data packages.
  • Experience evaluating nonconformances and performing root cause analysis within a production or maintenance environment.
  • Ability to coordinate with crossfunctional teams including Quality, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Program Managers, and Design Engineering.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to document engineering dispositions clearly and concisely.
  • Familiarity with stress analysis fundamentals and their application to MRB dispositions.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance.
  • Other Duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with four (4) years of technical engineering experience in an aircraft depot repair, aircraft maintenance, or aerospace component manufacturing environment.
  • Graduate Degree with two (2) years of technical engineering experience in an aircraft depot repair, aircraft maintenance, or aerospace component manufacturing environment.
  • In Lieu of a degree, a minimum of eight (8) years of technical engineering experience in an aircraft depot repair, aircraft maintenance, or aerospace component manufacturing environment.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Active Top Secret or Secret Clearance.
  • Direct experience performing MRB engineering activities, including nonconformance evaluation, repair development, and formal disposition generation.
