What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sustaining Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sustaining Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree such as in mechanical, electrical, or manufacturing engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, root cause analysis tools, and quality management systems is typically required, along with certifications like Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing being advantageous. Strong communication, collaboration, and adaptability help you excel in cross-functional teams and address ongoing product or process issues effectively. These skills are crucial to ensure product reliability, minimize downtime, and drive continuous improvement in manufacturing or product support environments.

How does a Sustaining Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve product issues?

Sustaining Engineers work closely with teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, customer support, and design engineering to address and resolve post-launch product issues. They often participate in root cause analysis meetings, coordinate updates or fixes, and communicate technical solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Effective collaboration ensures timely resolution of customer problems and continuous product improvement, making strong teamwork and communication skills essential for success in this role.

What is sustaining engineering?

Sustaining engineering is the process of supporting and improving products or systems after their initial release. Professionals in this field focus on maintaining product quality, addressing defects, implementing upgrades, and ensuring long-term reliability. Their work often involves collaborating with design, manufacturing, and customer support teams to resolve issues that arise during a product's lifecycle. Sustaining engineers play a crucial role in extending the value and performance of existing products while minimizing downtime and costs.

What is the difference between Sustaining Engineering vs Product Engineering?

Texas Hydraulics is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our Sustaining Engineering team. In this role, you'll support one of our product value streams by improving existing hydraulic cylinder designs, solving engineering challenges, and partnering with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality products to our customers.

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer who enjoys problem-solving, continuous improvement, and seeing designs move from concept to production. You'll work alongside experienced engineers while gaining exposure to manufacturing, quality, testing, and customer applications in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

What You'll Do
  • Support existing hydraulic cylinder designs through engineering analysis, product improvements, and design changes.
  • Create and revise manufacturing drawings and engineering documentation using Creo, Windchill, Mathcad, ANSYS, and related engineering tools.
  • Evaluate design changes to improve manufacturability, reliability, quality, and cost.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Operations, and Finance throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Participate in design reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Develop DFMEAs, validation plans, and engineering documentation to reduce design risk.
  • Assist with product validation and reliability testing.
  • Apply engineering principles, material science, and fluid mechanics to solve technical challenges.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, and internal teams.
  • Prepare technical reports and engineering documentation.
  • Support additional engineering projects as assigned.
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software (Creo preferred).
  • Understanding of engineering fundamentals, mechanics, and material science.
  • Familiarity with engineering analysis tools such as ANSYS and Mathcad is preferred.
  • Experience designing machined and welded components is a plus.
  • General understanding of hydraulic systems or fluid mechanics is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • A continuous improvement mindset with a desire to simplify processes and solve problems.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.
