How much do sustainable civil engineering jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for sustainable civil engineering in the United States is $25.39, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.43 and $27.64 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a sustainable civil engineer typically collaborate with other professionals on green infrastructure projects?

Sustainable civil engineers work closely with a diverse team, including architects, urban planners, environmental scientists, and construction managers, to design and implement eco-friendly infrastructure. Collaboration is key to ensuring that sustainability goals—such as energy efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and use of renewable materials—are integrated into every phase of a project. Regular meetings, interdisciplinary workshops, and open communication help align project objectives and address challenges early on. This teamwork enables sustainable civil engineers to create innovative solutions that meet both technical and environmental standards.

What is sustainable civil engineering?

Sustainable civil engineering is the practice of designing, constructing, and maintaining infrastructure in a way that minimizes environmental impact, conserves resources, and promotes long-term ecological balance. It involves using materials and methods that reduce pollution, energy consumption, and waste, while supporting social and economic needs. Sustainable civil engineers seek innovative solutions to create resilient cities, transportation networks, and water systems that remain viable for future generations.

What is the difference between Sustainable Civil Engineering vs Civil Engineering?

AspectSustainable Civil EngineeringCivil Engineering
CredentialsEngineering degree, possibly with specialization in sustainability or environmental engineeringEngineering degree, often with broad civil engineering focus
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, environmental consulting firms, design offices with emphasis on eco-friendly projectsConstruction sites, infrastructure projects, design firms
Industry UsageFocus on environmentally sustainable infrastructure and resource efficiencyDesign, construction, and maintenance of general infrastructure

While both roles involve civil engineering principles, Sustainable Civil Engineering emphasizes eco-friendly design and resource efficiency, whereas Civil Engineering covers a broader range of infrastructure projects without specific sustainability focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sustainable Civil Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sustainable Civil Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering principles, environmental science, and sustainable design, usually supported by a relevant degree and professional licensure (e.g., PE or LEED accreditation). Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software, life-cycle assessment tools, and sustainable building standards is typically required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively and advocate for green solutions. These abilities ensure that infrastructure projects minimize environmental impact while meeting safety, regulatory, and community needs.
