Surveyor Interns often face challenges such as working in various weather conditions, navigating rough terrain, and handling sensitive equipment accurately in the field. Preparation includes wearing appropriate safety gear, familiarizing yourself with survey instruments before assignments, and maintaining clear communication with your team. Building strong observation and problem-solving skills can help address unexpected obstacles, while seeking guidance from experienced surveyors ensures you learn best practices and work safely.

What are Surveyor Interns?

Surveyor Interns are students or recent graduates working under the supervision of licensed surveyors to gain practical experience in land surveying. They assist with tasks such as measuring land boundaries, collecting field data, operating surveying equipment, and preparing maps or reports. This internship is typically part of a degree requirement or serves as a way to gain hands-on skills needed for a career in surveying. Surveyor Interns often work outdoors and must have attention to detail, mathematical skills, and an interest in geography or engineering. The internship can also help candidates prepare for professional licensure as a surveyor.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Surveyor Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Surveyor Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge in surveying principles, mathematics, and mapping, often supported by coursework or progress toward a degree in surveying, civil engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as total stations, GPS equipment, CAD software, and data collection systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are important soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate data collection, reliable results, and successful collaboration on surveying projects.

Job Description
Job Description
KPFF's San Diego Survey Group is seeking a motivated Survey Intern interested in gaining hands-on experience in land surveying and civil engineering support. This internship provides the opportunity to work directly with professional surveyors in both the field and office while contributing to real projects throughout Southern California.

  4. Performing basic research of survey records and maps.
  5. Supporting project teams with general survey-related tasks as needed.

Interns will have the opportunity to work both in the field and in the office and gain exposure to modern survey equipment and software used in professional practice, including survey drafting and mapping using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Qualifications
