Job description

A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is looking for an At-Sea Survey Technician/EM Reviewer to support NOAA SEFSC Population and Ecosystems Monitoring Division (PEMD).


Primary Function:

The At-Sea Survey Technician/EM Reviewer supports the Gulf and Caribbean Reef Fish Branch (GCRF) within SEFSC's PEMD. The incumbent learns and executes at-sea survey duties aboard NOAA Ships and small research vessels, conducts video annotation of reef fish survey footage using VIAME software, performs data entry and QA/QC into Oracle databases, and participates in public outreach efforts. This position is contingent upon contract award and available funding.


Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Survey Technician on NOAA Ships and Small Research Vessels for GCRF reef fish surveys
  • Conduct pre- and post-survey equipment inventory, preparation, loading, cleaning, and maintenance
  • Collect biological and/or environmental samples and log and process data under field conditions per prescribed SOPs
  • Learn annotation SOPs for GFISHER and PRDW video data using VIAME software on Google Cloud Platform
  • Identify marine fishes in all life stages from Gulf of America and adjacent sea habitats
  • Perform human-in-the-loop review and correction of automated video annotation outputs
  • Enter and upload annotated data into GCRF Oracle databases; perform QA/QC
  • Update annotation tracking sheets and GitHub project management tools
  • Learn AI/ML software tools for post-processing data outputs
  • Participate in public outreach and education activities including school visits, science fairs, and facility tours


Compensation:

Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated, and total compensation will vary depending on candidates' depth of experience. This is a full-time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in Marine Science or a related field of study (volunteer experience valued)
  • Computer literate; proficient with word processing, database, statistical, and graphics programs; able to write reports at the college level
  • Proficient with fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification keys; knowledge of reef taxa from the Gulf of America
  • Knowledge of endangered or threatened species
  • Sea going contractors must submit NOAA Health Services Questionnaire (NOAA Form 57-10-01) and Tuberculosis Screening Form (NOAA Form NF 57-10-02) annually/biennially; must have current tetanus vaccine

Travel:

  • Domestic travel required for at-sea surveys aboard NOAA Research Vessels.
