What is a Surface Pattern Designer job?

A Surface Pattern Designer creates repeatable patterns and designs for various products, such as textiles, wallpaper, stationery, and packaging. They use hand-drawn or digital techniques to develop visually appealing patterns that enhance a product's aesthetic and market appeal. Their work involves researching trends, developing color palettes, and collaborating with manufacturers or brands to produce commercially viable designs.

What are some common projects or responsibilities a Surface Pattern Designer handles on a daily basis?

As a Surface Pattern Designer, you'll typically work on creating repeat patterns and print designs for products such as textiles, wallpapers, apparel, or home goods. Daily tasks may involve researching trends, sketching new ideas, digitizing artwork, and refining designs based on client or team feedback. You may also prepare files for production, collaborate with product developers, and present concepts to internal stakeholders or clients. This variety ensures every day is creative and allows you to see the direct impact of your designs on finished products.

What does a surface pattern designer do?

A surface pattern designer creates repeating or non-repeating designs for surfaces such as textiles, wallpapers, and product packaging. They use digital tools like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop to develop patterns that are visually appealing and suitable for manufacturing or printing processes.

How do you become a surface pattern designer?

To become a surface pattern designer, you typically need a background in graphic design, illustration, or fine arts, along with proficiency in design software like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. Building a strong portfolio showcasing your pattern work, gaining experience through internships or freelance projects, and understanding trends and manufacturing processes are essential steps in establishing a career in this field.

Is surface pattern design oversaturated?

Surface pattern design is a competitive field, but opportunities remain for skilled designers with strong portfolios, unique styles, and proficiency in tools like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Success often depends on niche specialization, networking, and staying current with industry trends, rather than market saturation alone.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Surface Pattern Designer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Surface Pattern Designer, you need a strong background in design principles, color theory, and pattern creation, often supported by a degree in graphic design, textile design, or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and CAD tools is crucial, and familiarity with print production methods can be beneficial. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help designers collaborate effectively with teams and clients. These abilities ensure the creation of appealing, commercially viable patterns that meet client objectives and production requirements.

Is AI taking over surface pattern design?

AI is increasingly used as a tool in surface pattern design to generate ideas and assist with repetitive tasks, but it does not replace the creativity and artistic skills of a professional surface pattern designer. Designers often use AI to enhance their workflow, combining technology with traditional skills to produce unique patterns. Success in this field still relies on a strong understanding of design principles, software proficiency, and originality.

Job description

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Design original softgoods from concept to production-ready tech pack across bedding, blankets, cushions, soft toys, draperies, and rugs.
  • Develop and adapt designs across all six MDB Co. brands, with a primary focus on Babyletto and Namesake.
  • Build and maintain tech packs including construction details, material call-outs, colorways, trims, and tolerances.
  • Select and specify textiles, fills, hardware, and trims in collaboration with our sourcing team.
  • Work directly with overseas manufacturing partners in Asia, reviewing samples and communicating revisions clearly and precisely.
  • Develop seasonal color palettes and surface patterns that align with each brand's creative direction.
  • Stay current on softgoods trends in baby, nursery, and home categories and bring relevant insights to the team.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product development, brand marketing, and merchandising to move products from concept to shelf.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and hit deadlines without needing to be chased.

What You Bring to The Table:

Required

  • 5+ years of experience designing softgoods for consumer products, home goods, baby/nursery, or a closely adjacent category.
  • Expert-level Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop skills. You use them daily to create original artwork and build clean, production-ready technical drawings.
  • Strong tech pack creation skills. You build complete packs from scratch, not from templates someone else made.
  • Deep knowledge of textiles and materials including fabrics, fills, weaves, thread counts, trims, and how they behave in production.
  • Experience with textile sourcing, including mill relationships, material specifications, and supply chain awareness.
  • Hands-on experience working with offshore manufacturing partners, reviewing samples, and redlining with precision.
  • A wide design range. You are equally comfortable designing into a clean, modern nursery aesthetic, an approachable traditional bedroom, and a layered maximalist interior.
  • Sharp eye for color, pattern, composition, and surface design.
  • Strong communication skills. You can present your work clearly and advocate for your design decisions.
  • You're able to manage a project by creating a schedule, tracking milestones and key decisions, understanding who needs to be updated, breaking bad news when necessary, and most importantly celebrating wins with the team!

Nice to Have

  • Experience with PLM software (e.g., Centric, Bamboo Rose, or similar).
  • Working knowledge of pattern-making or garment construction basics.
  • Experience designing for the baby or children's category specifically.
  • Familiarity with OEKO-TEX, GOTS, or other textile safety and sustainability certifications.Â
