Support Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Support Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Support Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages, debugging techniques, and problem-solving skills, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with ticketing systems, version control tools like Git, and experience with databases or APIs are typically required. Strong communication, patience, and teamwork are vital soft skills for collaborating with users and internal teams. These skills are crucial for efficiently resolving technical issues, maintaining software reliability, and ensuring high customer satisfaction.

What is a Support Developer?

A Support Developer is a software professional who assists customers or internal teams by troubleshooting and resolving technical issues related to software products or services. They often work closely with users to understand problems, analyze software behavior, and provide fixes or guidance. Support Developers may also collaborate with engineering teams to escalate and resolve complex bugs or feature requests. Their role bridges the gap between users and development, ensuring smooth software operation and customer satisfaction.

How does a Support Developer typically collaborate with other teams to resolve customer issues quickly?

Support Developers work closely with both the customer support and core engineering teams to address technical issues reported by clients. They often act as a bridge, translating customer feedback into actionable bug reports or feature requests, and may participate in daily stand-ups or cross-team meetings to prioritize urgent tickets. Effective communication and a problem-solving mindset are key, as Support Developers must balance customer needs with internal development timelines. This collaborative environment not only helps resolve issues faster but also provides opportunities to learn from various technical experts within the organization.

We are TRADER, a Canadian leader in digital automotive solutions. Our flagship brands - AutoTrader.ca, AutoSync, Dealertrack Canada and CMS - help Canadians buy, sell, and finance vehicles with confidence.

This role will be within our Collateral Management (CMS) team, a national tech solution that boosts lien and registration services, recovery services, and insolvency management solutions for Canadian Lenders.

---

About the CMS Registry Solution

The CMS Registry Solution powers end-to-end collateral and lien management for banks, automotive finance companies, credit unions and other lenders. The platform automates the full lien lifecycle-registration, amendment, search, monitoring and discharge-to protecting lenders, reduce risk and ensure compliance, and provides value-added features such as lien validation, asset monitoring and fraud detection.

We're actively modernizing the platform that is mission-critical used by major financial institutions with a focus on scalability, automation, and developer experience. Current work includes containerizing services, upgrading .NET runtimes, strengthening CI/CD and observability, and adopting Infrastructure as Code-alongside pragmatic AI-assisted development and intelligent QA.

You'll join a small, critical, high-impact support team (engineers, product owner, engineering manager) focused on keeping customer-facing systems reliable and resolving real production issues. You'll own the operational health of key parts of the platform, contribute to incident response and reliability improvements, and help raise the quality bar through strong troubleshooting, documentation, and engineering judgment.

The Software Engineer - Support is an individual contributor responsible for maintaining the reliability, stability, and operational health of CMS services. This role focuses on hands-on execution within a single team or service area, supporting production systems and contributing to continuous operational improvement.

The role works across the full stack - Angular frontends, .NET (Core / 6+ / .NET 8) services, and SQL Server - and delivers KTLO / BAU outcomes including incident response, production troubleshooting, runbook maintenance, release and patch support, and reliability improvements under guidance.

The engineer collaborates closely with Product, Development, Platform, and Database teams to help ensure service availability, meet SLAs, and support safe change delivery.

What You'll Do:

Incident Management & Operations

  • Support the reliability and operational health of current EC2-hosted services while assisting with incident response, monitoring, and KTLO operations during the migration to containerized deployments
  • Participate in production incident response by triaging issues and contributing to resolution in line with defined SLAs
  • Participate in an on-call rotation, following established escalation paths and providing after-hours support as required
  • Communicate incident status and updates clearly to technical stakeholders
Monitoring, Troubleshooting & Reliability
  • Monitor application and infrastructure health using tools such as New Relic, SolarWinds DPA, CloudWatch, or Datadog
  • Proactively tune alerts and act on early warning signals to prevent customer impact
  • Diagnose complex production issues using logs, traces, metrics, and user reports
  • Apply mitigations and deliver permanent fixes in collaboration with development teams

KTLO / BAU Ownership

  • Maintain and update runbooks, playbooks, FAQs, and troubleshooting documentation
  • Perform KTLO activities such as scheduled maintenance, patching, backups and restores, database indexing, archiving jobs, and capacity checks
  • Support releases, hotfixes, and patches, including deployment validation and production smoke testing

Continuous Improvement

  • Contribute to root cause analysis (RCA) for production incidents
  • Identify recurring issues and suggest operational or automation improvements
  • Assist with performance investigations, including SQL query analysis, under guidance
  • Adopt automation and AI-assisted tooling to reduce operational toil and improve triage efficiency

What We're Looking For:

Must Have

  • Hands-on experience with .NET and C#, including modern .NET runtimes, for production support and fixes
  • Familiarity with AWS services such as EC2, S3, CloudWatch, and IAM
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions preferred), including release support and troubleshooting
  • A DevOps mindset with interest in build, deploy, operate, and improve workflows
  • Working knowledge of Angular, TypeScript, and RESTful APIs, with the ability to debug issues across the stack
  • Experience supporting SQL Server-based applications, including basic performance analysis and operational tasks (AWS RDS experience a plus)
  • Comfort working in production environments and responding to incidents
  • Interest in using AI-assisted development and intelligent QA tools to improve productivity
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and ownership mindset

Nice-To-Have

  • Experience with Docker and containerized applications
  • Exposure to Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or CloudFormation)
  • Familiarity with modern test automation tools (e.g., Playwright, Cypress)
  • Prior experience in L2/L3 production support or on-call rotations

Impact You'll Deliver:

By joining the Support team, you'll help keep the CMS platform stable and trusted by contributing to faster incident resolution, safer releases, improved operational documentation, and the organization's transition toward more cloud-native and automated operations.
