We are seeking an experienced and motivated Director, Communications to join our team. In this role, you will support all facets of integrated communications for the Phoenix Mercury (WNBA) and Valley Suns (NBA G League) while playing a key role in broader department initiatives.
Your Role on the Team
  • Lead Communications Strategy
    • Develop and execute comprehensive communications strategies that enhance brand reputation, support organizational priorities, and advance the overall business of the Mercury and Valley Suns
    • Ensure consistency, accuracy and alignment across all external-facing communications
    • Lead communications planning and execution around key organizational moments, including player transactions, community initiatives, league events, campaigns, partnerships and special announcements
    • Oversee the creation of compelling storytelling, press materials, and thoughtful leadership initiatives
    • Guide messaging across traditional, digital, and broadcast (OTA and DTC) platforms to maximize reach and engagement
    • Proactively identify, pitch, and secure high-value media opportunities
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with local and national media, broadcast talent, media rights partners and league communications staff across the Women's National Basketball Association and NBA G League
  • Lead Game Day Communications
    • Lead all game day media operations, ensuring a best-in-class experience for media and stakeholders
    • Serve as the primary media contact for the Mercury and Valley Suns
    • Travel with the Mercury to oversee media relations operations and ensure seamless gameday communications support during away games and league events
    • Ensure compliance with league requirements for administrative reporting and management of scorers and stats crews
  • Team Player
    • Manage, mentor and serve as a trusted advisor to the Manager of Communications and game-night assistants while fostering a collaborative, high-performing team environment
    • Collaborate with and serve as a trusted communications partner across the entire communications team
    • Partner closely with basketball and business operations, senior leadership and league counterparts, helping align messaging across organizational priorities and key initiatives
    • Collaborate cross-functionally with marketing, social media, content, creative, broadcast, partnerships and community relations teams to amplify team narratives and ensure integrated communications support across key objectives

Your Skills and Experience
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends and holidays, as travel in the position is required for away games
  • Deep understanding of basketball statistics and terminology
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in communications, journalism or public relations
  • Minimum of 7 years of public relations/communications experience, preferably with a professional sports team or league
