Job description

SUNLAND ASPHALT
Sunland Asphalt is looking for a seasoned Project Manager to join our growing team in Phoenix, AZ to oversee and manage heavy civil construction projects from pre-construction through final completion. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in earthwork, grading, asphalt paving, site development, and project administration. This role requires strong leadership, scheduling, budgeting, and communication skills to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Key Responsibilities
Project Management
  • Manage multiple civil grading and asphalt paving projects simultaneously.
  • Oversee all phases of construction including planning, budgeting, scheduling, execution, and closeout.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, milestones, and production goals.
  • Monitor project performance, costs, labor productivity, and equipment utilization.
  • Identify risks and implement mitigation strategies to maintain project profitability.

Financial Management
  • Prepare and manage project budgets and forecasts.
  • Track project costs, production quantities, and progress billing.
  • Review and approve subcontractor and vendor invoices.
  • Manage change orders, contract modifications, and claims.
  • Ensure projects meet or exceed profit margin targets.

Operations & Field Coordination
  • Coordinate daily activities with superintendents, foremen, subcontractors, suppliers, and owners.
  • Ensure grading, paving, and utility work is completed according to plans and specifications.
  • Conduct site visits to monitor progress, quality, safety, and compliance.
  • Resolve field issues and provide technical support to project teams.
  • Coordinate material procurement and equipment scheduling.

Client Relations
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for general contractors, owners, municipalities, and subcontractors.
  • Attend project meetings and provide regular progress updates.
  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships.
  • Promote repeat business through exceptional project execution and communication.

Safety & Quality Assurance
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Promote a culture of safety throughout all project activities.
  • Oversee quality control procedures and ensure work meets project specifications and industry standards.
  • Participate in safety audits and project inspections.

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, or related field, or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of project management experience related field.
  • Extensive experience with:
    • Mass grading and earthwork
    • Asphalt paving
    • Site development
    • Underground utilities
    • Public works and private development projects
  • Strong understanding of construction contracts, plans, specifications, and estimating.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and project management software.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

Preferred
  • 7+ years of heavy civil project management experience.
  • Experience with municipal, DOT, or private development projects.
  • Knowledge of Bid 2 Win, HCSS, HeavyJob, HeavyBid, Primavera P6, MS Project, Bluebeam, or similar construction management software.
  • OSHA 10 or 30 Certification.
