What is a summer respite worker?

Summer respite workers are individuals who provide temporary relief and support to families or caregivers of people with disabilities, special needs, or chronic illnesses during the summer months. Their primary role is to ensure the safety and well-being of their clients, while also engaging them in recreational and educational activities. This allows primary caregivers to take a break, attend to other responsibilities, or simply recharge. Summer respite work can take place in the client's home, at community centers, or during specialized summer programs and camps. These workers are often trained in basic care, first aid, and behavior management to ensure a safe and positive environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer respite worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Respite Worker, you need a background in caregiving or education, basic first aid/CPR certification, and experience working with children or individuals with special needs. Familiarity with activity planning, behavior management strategies, and safety protocols is typically required. Patience, strong interpersonal skills, and adaptability help you build trust and effectively support clients in diverse situations. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring a safe, engaging, and supportive environment for those in your care during respite periods.

What are the most common challenges faced by summer respite workers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Summer Respite workers often face challenges such as adapting quickly to new client needs, managing diverse schedules, and balancing the emotional demands of caring for individuals with special needs or disabilities. Effective communication with families and team members, as well as flexibility and strong organizational skills, are key to overcoming these challenges. Additionally, utilizing support resources and taking time for self-care can help ensure a positive experience for both the worker and those they support.

Job description

Description:

Make a Meaningful Impact

Parc Center for Disabilities provides opportunities for children and adults with developmental disabilities to exercise their independence and experience life to the fullest. Our vision is a community where all individuals live with dignity and are treated with respect.

We are seeking a compassionate, organized, and community-focused Caregiver Relief Manager to lead a vital respite program supporting children with disabilities and their families. By connecting families with quality respite services and community resources, this program helps strengthen families and reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Program Manager will oversee daily operations, supervise a primarily off-site workforce, maintain program quality and contract compliance, and expand the program’s reach throughout the community.

What You’ll Do

  • Manage the daily operations of the Caregiver Relief Program and ensure children and families receive consistent, high-quality services.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and support Caregiver Relief Providers who work throughout the community.
  • Supervise the social worker assigned to the program.
  • Monitor referrals and manage the program waitlist to support timely and appropriate access to services.
  • Administer Parc’s assessment tools during intake and at required follow-up intervals.
  • Maintain program quality through utilization management, quality-assurance activities, and ongoing review of service delivery.
  • Manage the BayCare grant, including compliance, reporting, program outcomes, and overall performance.
  • Prepare reports regarding program activities, performance measures, and outcomes.
  • Build relationships with caregivers, referral sources, service providers, and community partners.
  • Lead community outreach and marketing efforts to increase awareness of the program.
  • Partner with Parc’s Development team to identify and secure additional funding opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Finance team to prepare and monitor the program’s annual and monthly budgets.
  • Plan and oversee group respite events, summer camp, and other program activities.
  • Identify opportunities to expand the program and respond to the changing needs of children and families.
  • Provide after-hours support when program needs require it.
  • Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements:

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, early intervention, behavior modification, childcare, or a related field; or an associate degree with at least four years of relevant experience.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities or developmental delays, particularly children and families in at-risk environments.
  • Experience supervising and organizing a large, community-based or remote workforce.
  • Case management experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of local community resources is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative and adaptable approach with a genuine desire to improve services and processes.
  • Ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other electronic systems.
  • Ability to observe and respond to children’s needs, lift up to 40 pounds, and meet the physical demands of working with children in a variety of settings.

Schedule and Travel

  • The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Flexibility is required based on program and operational needs.
  • Because many Caregiver Relief Providers work during evenings and weekends, the Program Manager must be available to provide occasional after-hours and on-call support.
  • This position requires reliable transportation and countywide travel approximately 25% of the time. A valid Florida driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required.

Salary

$53,000-60,000 annually

Benefits

  • 10 paid holidays
  • 2 personal days
  • 18 PTO days
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Short-term disability, accident, critical illness, life, and AD&D coverage
  • Health Savings Account and Flexible Spending Account options
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • 403(b) retirement plan
