What is a summer nurse?

Summer nurses are registered or licensed practical nurses who work temporary or seasonal positions during the summer months. They often fill in for permanent staff who are on vacation, work at summer camps, schools, outdoor events, or provide support in hospitals and clinics experiencing higher patient loads. Summer nurses perform typical nursing duties, such as administering medication, providing first aid, and managing health emergencies. These roles are ideal for nurses seeking flexible work or students gaining experience during breaks.

What jobs are available for a summer nurse?

A summer nurse provides healthcare services on a seasonal basis. A registered nurse (RN) may help assess and treat each patient at a youth summer camp or tourist destination that is open during the summertime. In these positions, you provide medical care for camp participants and staff or visitors to the destination. You provide first aid and offer treatment for minor medical issues. If a patient needs emergency care, your duties include coordinating with physicians or other emergency medical technicians and communicating information about the patient’s condition.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a summer nurse?

To thrive as a Summer Nurse, you need a current RN or LPN license, strong clinical assessment abilities, and first aid/CPR certification. Familiarity with camp health protocols, electronic health records, and emergency response procedures is often required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and teamwork are vital soft skills for supporting young campers and collaborating with staff. These competencies ensure prompt, effective care and a safe, healthy environment during seasonal healthcare assignments.

What are the typical responsibilities of a summer nurse?

Summer Nurses often work in seasonal settings such as camps, schools, or community programs, focusing on immediate care for minor injuries and illnesses, medication administration, and health education. Unlike year-round hospital roles, Summer Nurses usually handle higher volumes of minor cases and collaborate closely with counselors, teachers, or activity leaders to maintain a safe environment. The pace can be fast and requires adaptability, as resources may be more limited than in clinical settings. This role offers valuable experience in triage, autonomy, and working with children or youth in non-traditional healthcare environments.
