Student Employee, Biology/Chemistry Lab Assistant Assistant

Job Description:

The Biology/Chemistry lab assistant will assist with Biology/Chemistry laboratory prep by cleaning and maintaining laboratory equipment.

POSITION TITLE: Student Employee, Biology/Chemistry Laboratory Assistant,
STATUS: Part-time
DEPARTMENT: Natural Sciences and Physical Education
DIVISION: Academic Affairs
REPORTS TO: Biology Lab Supervisor
CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt

MINIMIUM PAY RATE: $15.00 per hour
(Position is FWS Eligible)

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Abide by Safety Procedures & Policies as detailed in the JJC Chemical Hygiene Plan
2. Prepare laboratory materials for all Biology and Chemistry courses.
3. Prepare media for Microbiology Labs, including; operating the autoclave & practicing aseptic techniques.
4. Maintenance of aquariums, plants, lab animals and other living specimens.
5. Maintenance of cadavers.
6. Maintenance of laboratory equipment & supplies, including; cleaning, storage & inventories.
7. Maintenance of classrooms and general lab clean-up.
8. Prepare chemical solutions. Observe proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

9. Work 10-20 hours per week, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 am to 4:00 pm
10. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Enrolled at JJC for 6 or more credit hours.

2. GPA of 2.0 or above.

3. Complete previous coursework in Biology and/or Chemistry
4. Must be able to work well with others
5. Must be able to communicate effectively

6. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.

2. Demonstrated multicultural competence.

WORKING CONDITIONS
* Duties are performed indoors in the usual office and/or outdoor environment.

Scheduled Weekly Hours: This is a student employee position that works around your class schedule. May work up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. During summer and holiday breaks (Winter/Spring), may work up to 28 hours per week with supervisor approval.
