What is a summer lab intern?

Summer Lab Interns are typically students or recent graduates who work temporarily in a laboratory setting during the summer months. They assist with scientific research, experiments, and data collection under the guidance of experienced lab staff. These internships provide hands-on experience and exposure to laboratory techniques, often helping interns decide on future career paths in science. Responsibilities can vary depending on the lab, but usually include maintaining equipment, recording observations, and supporting ongoing research projects.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a summer lab intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Summer Lab Intern, you can expect to participate in a variety of hands-on projects that support ongoing research within the lab. Your daily tasks may include preparing samples, conducting experiments under supervision, collecting and analyzing data, and assisting with equipment maintenance. Collaboration is key, as you’ll often work closely with graduate students, technicians, and principal investigators who will guide your learning and help you develop essential lab skills. Interns are usually encouraged to ask questions, contribute to team meetings, and may have opportunities to present their findings. This role offers a great foundation for understanding real-world research environments and can open doors for future academic or professional pursuits in science.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer lab intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Lab Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge in science or engineering, strong analytical skills, and enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, safety protocols, and software tools like Excel or data analysis platforms is often required. Attention to detail, strong communication, and eagerness to learn are key soft skills that help interns stand out. These skills and qualities ensure safe, accurate experimentation, effective teamwork, and meaningful contributions to ongoing research projects.

Internships are for students interested in taking on campus related challenges and developing solutions that advance Middlebury's sustainability and environmental leadership. This paid position consists of 3-5 hours of work per week from Monday, September 14- Friday, December 11, 2026 (with potential to continue for spring semester).

SEA develops, implements, and supports sustainability initiatives that achieve environmental, social, and economic goals throughout the campus community, College operations, and the community at large. The office works in different ways, from supporting independent student research projects to helping administrators and facilities staff with green campus infrastructure.

This is a Middlebury student position compensated at the Level B rate on the Midd student wage scale: $14.95 per hour

Core Responsibilities:

*All interns are expected to meet weekly with their respective advisor(s) and team (if applicable). The remainder of hours will be used for independent work.

THE FOLLOWING TWO POSITIONS ARE AVAILABLE:

Sustainability Abroad Intern

The sustainability abroad intern will work closely with the Study Abroad office, the Sustainability and Environmental Affairs office, and Middlebury's Sustainability Abroad working group to develop and advance Middlebury's sustainability abroad initiatives. This includes participating in, and working on projects directed by, the Sustainability Abroad Working Group, developing outreach materials and other materials explicitly connected to Middlebury's strategic plan, reviewing and updating sustainability abroad resources, working on the Global Partnerships for Sustainability (GPS) program, and cross-institutional research on initiatives abroad, among other projects.

In the cover letter for this position, please share why you are interested in sustainability abroad and whether there are any specific areas within the topic of sustainability abroad in which you are particularly interested. In addition, please indicate whether or not you have studied abroad and/or whether you intend to do so.

Communications Intern

These projects can include, but are not limited to, social media outreach, graphic design, co-development of outreach strategy for Middlebury's STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System) report, events advertising, Energy2028 communications, website updates and design, and many others. Communications interns work collaboratively with SEA staff members and other experts to develop effective communications strategies for increasing awareness of holistic sustainability across campus.

In the cover letter for this position, please include any relevant previous experience in communications. In addition, include any specific project ideas/topics that you are interested in pursuing as part of this internship.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

We seek students who are creative, passionate team-players.No experience is necessary-the Sustainability Solutions Lab will provide any background information and training needed to complete projects in a meaningful manner. For communications interns, graphic design experience is a bonus but not required.

 Additions to your application:

  • Please attach your resume and cover letter.
Student Employment Eligibility:

Unless restricted by certain visa status, all students with an active status for the semester are eligible for jobs on campus.

Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return. If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions.

Some may be restricted due to financial aid status. International students (non-resident aliens) may not work off campus unless they have applied for and received work authorization from the United States government. (An F-1 visa does not give work authorization.) Off campus work study positions are available only to U.S. citizens on financial aid with a federal work study component.

Students are not eligible to work remotely from International locations.

Hour Limitations:

SSL interns work 3-5 hours per week during the academic year. Any variation from this time window should be cleared with SSL advisors.

All student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week in on campus jobs during the academic year (this includes exam periods). The only exception is when there is a full week when school is not in session. Specifically: February recess, Spring recess, and full weeks of December or summer recess. During these time periods only, students can work up to 40 hours per week. International Students: Visa restrictions prohibit international students from exceeding 20 hours of work per academic calendar week.
