Summary of Job Responsibilities:

The Southcentral Foundation (SCF) Genetic Counselor brings prior clinical experience and serves in a leadership role within the clinical team, providing expert guidance, oversight, and mentorship on genetic topics. Core responsibilities include coordinating clinical tasks and procedures between local and off-site team members, triaging complex referrals, and providing specialized guidance on challenging clinical cases.

Furthermore, the Genetic Counselor is responsible for working collaboratively with physicians and subspecialists, providing professional genetic counseling to customer-owners and families with genetic backgrounds of hereditary diseases and disorders. The Genetic Counselor supports and coordinates communication between the customer-owner and multidisciplinary teams, provides support in the diagnosis and evaluation of such conditions, and collaborates on a course of action and care options. In SCF’s unique health model, the Genetic Counselor acts as the core specialty genetics consultant and has a critical role in directing care for complex medical cases.

Qualifications:

SCF programs are established to serve a primary population comprised of Alaska Native people who are affiliated with Cook Inlet Region, Inc. (CIRI) and Alaska Native and American Indian people within SCF’s geographical service area. Employees should have a thorough understanding of the cultures and the needs of this population. Such knowledge is critical to ensure the achievement of SCF’s vision of a Native Community that enjoys physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness, and mission of working together with the Native Community to achieve wellness through health and related services. Other requirements include:

  1. Master’s degree in Human Genetics or Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) accredited training program.
  2. Clinical genetic counseling experience, preferably in the field of Pediatrics.
  3. ABGC/ABMG board certified.
  4. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. ACLS, NRP, ATLS, ALSO and PALS as required for specialty and any certification relating to the scope of practice as required.

Alaska is known as the land of the midnight sun as we bask in 19.5 hours of daylight during summer solstice. Our summer temperatures reach the mid to upper 70’s and the landscape transforms into green trees and flower blossoms. During winter solstice we enjoy beautiful sunrises and sunsets over beautiful snowcapped mountains and darkness brings the possibility of breathtaking displays of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).

Hundreds of kilometers of groomed, interconnected cross country ski trails in town are lit at night by artificial light and the incredible moonlight reflecting off the snow. These trails are also perfect for running and biking year-round.

Anchorage – city of 330,000, the largest city in Alaska

Fantastic restaurants and a diverse music and arts community, fantastic community, incredible outdoor activity opportunities with spectacular camping, hiking, and fishing locations just 15 mins away by car. Lots of cultural activities – a performing arts center that hosts national and regional troops, the Anchorage Museum of Natural History and the Alaska Native Heritage Center.
