About This Role

Summer Counselor Position


Program Vision. At Kent Community Nursery School (KCNS), we create a nurturing environment where children can explore, learn, and grow. Our play-based approach fosters social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development.


The Summer Counselor role is a perfect fit for someone who is passionate about working with young minds. The position is available from May to August, with varying hours throughout the summer. From August 10-21, you'll work 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday, for 35 hours a week. We may also need you to substitute on an as-needed basis from June 29 to July 17.


What You'll Do

Summer Counselor responsibilities include:

  • Creating an engaging and safe environment for children, emphasizing extensive outdoor time and play-based learning.
  • Establishing a daily routine with the children, which includes activities like morning walks, circle time, art, projects, reading, and mealtimes.
  • Supporting the emotional wellbeing of each child and encouraging self-reliance and self-esteem.
  • Maintaining safety awareness and hygiene practices, including toileting and hand washing.
  • Monitoring children during learning times, mealtimes, and restroom breaks.
  • Collaborating with other teachers on activities and ensuring a smooth day-to-day operation.
  • Communicating effectively with children, parents, staff, and the KCNS Directors, while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Being well-groomed and neatly dressed at all times.

Requirements

Qualifications required:

  • Eighteen (18) years of age or older
  • A minimum of a high school diploma or an equivalent certificate
  • Required certifications (see list below)
  • Experience working with preschool-age children and a genuine passion for working with young minds

Required certifications must be completed by the time the position begins:

  • Child Care and CPR/First Aid Certification: Adult, Child, Infant, (renewed every 2 years)
  • Administration of Medication Training for Childcare: Oral, topical, and inhalant medication, (renewed every 3 years)
  • Administration of Medication Training for Childcare: Injectable medication, (renewed every year)
  • CT Care 4 Kids Health and Safety Training,
  • CT OEC Background Check, completed by the time the position begins (renewed at expiration)
  • Medical Exam, (within a year)

We can help coordinate a training for the above-mentioned certifications and the time to complete the certification is paid by KCNS.


Nice To Haves

Nice to have: previous experience with children's summer programs, knowledge of local child development organizations, or a related degree in Early Childhood Education or a similar field.
