Job description

General Definition of Work INTERVIEWS WILL BEGIN THE WEEK OF MARCH 16, 2026. Are you enthusiastic, motivated and enjoy working with kids. Spend your summer working with The City of New Bern Parks and Recreation Department as a Summer Camp Counselor.

We are currently recruiting Summer Camp Counselors. Camp Dates: June 8, 2026 - August 14, 2026 Camp Locations: West New Bern Recreation Center, Stanley A. White Recreation Center and Pleasant Hill Community Center Must be able to work varied schedules from 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM Monday - Friday.

*Camps will not be in session on Friday, July 3, 2026. Essential Functions/Typical Tasks (The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.) Daily guidance of campers ages 6-12

Leads and participates in camp activities. Assists other counselors as needed. Supervises campers ensuring their safety and wellbeing at all times.

Teaches sport skills. Supervises campers at the aquatic facilities and on field trips. Assists in planning daily activities.

Assists with completing Summer Food Program documentation and guidelines. Leads group games and art projects. Assists in maintaining attendance records and permission slips for each camper.

Handles parental concerns and complaints when supervisor is not available. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of recreation activities; knowledge of promoting good conduct and representing a positive role model for campers; skilled in working in a team environment; ability to maintain effective and courteous working relationship with campers, parents, employees, community organization partners and the public; ability to understand and abide by City of New Bern Parks and Recreation Department policies and procedures; ability to lead, supervise and use good judgement; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Requirements Must be 17 years old as of May 30, 2026. Previous experience in summer camp setting preferred. Previous experience interacting with children or teens (paid or volunteer), such as in a school, camp, daycare, or recreational setting preferred.

Must possess Basic First Aid and CPR Certification prior to employment. For those selected for employment who do not have Basic First Aid/CPR certifications, the City of New Bern will conduct Basic First Aid and CPR Certification training prior to June 8, 2026. Must possess appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina, CDL P preferred.
