Readers 2 Leaders is seeking hard working and enthusiastic AmeriCorps members to assist with Summer Camp and impact elementary-age students in West Dallas. The goal of the program is to help students entering 1st-5th grade retain and strengthen their reading skills during the months they are not in school and not fall victim to the "Summer Slide." AmeriCorps members will help support the daily operations of the Readers 2 Leaders' Summer Camp by managing and monitoring students as they rotate through program activities, facilitating hands-on STEM and SEL activities, reading aloud with students one-on-one and in small groups, and chaperoning field trips.

Readers 2 Leaders Summer Camp will be fully in person, and members will work with students face to face each day.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 17 years or older
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident 
  • Must serve full term  - 05/28/2026-8/07/2026 
  • Interest in teaching, tutoring, and/or working with children
  • Mandatory availability: Monday-Thursday 8:00am-4:30pm
  • Ability to pass a background check 

Responsibilities:  

  • Serve as a teacher/mentor in Summer Camp 
  • Assist with the creation and facilitation of hands-on STEM and arts learning activities for students 
  • Coordinate student/volunteer pairings for the Reading Buddies sessions 
  • Assist students with independent learning in the computer lab 
  • Support staff with arrival and dismissal car line 
  • Chaperone off-site field trips
  • Engage in professional learning on culturally relevant teaching practices
  • Attend all staff trainings and meetings (weekly staff meetings, team meetings, and supervisor check-ins)
  • Support the general focus of Readers 2 Leaders through other mission-focused projects
  • Build positive relationships with students

TERM COMMITMENT: 

  • 05/28/2026-8/07/2026

HOURS:

  • Approximately 32-34 hours per week  
  • Mandatory availability: onsite Monday-Thursday 8 am- 4:30 pm

COMPENSATION:

  •  Living Allowance of $3,000.00; paid out biweekly ($600.00)
  • Education Award of $1,565.08 (available after completing the full term and all requirements and can be applied towards student loans or future tuition and fees)
