Job Description Summary
Eastern Oregon University is seeking a dedicated and student-centered Academic and Student Success Advisor to support the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program. This grant-funded position plays a key role in promoting persistence, academic success, and degree completion for eligible students. The Advisor provides holistic academic advising, mentoring, and proactive outreach while coordinating key components of the Pathways to Success Bridge Program, including transition-to-college activities, workshops, and academic success programming.
Working collaboratively with campus partners, the Advisor helps students navigate college systems, build essential academic and life skills, and develop confidence and a sense of belonging from entry through graduation. Responsibilities include advising a caseload of TRIO students, facilitating workshops and courses, supporting student programming and events, maintaining accurate records for grant compliance, and contributing to assessment and continuous improvement efforts. This position is funded through a federal TRIO grant for a five-year term, with continued employment contingent upon ongoing grant funding.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and deliver the Pathways to Success Bridge Program, including summer transition activities, academic success courses, and workshops that prepare TRIO SSS students for college-level learning.
- Provide holistic academic advising and personalized mentoring to a caseload of TRIO SSS participants to support persistence, academic achievement, and degree completion.
- Assess student academic readiness, skill development needs, and personal challenges; develop and monitor individualized academic success plans.
- Plan and facilitate workshops and courses focused on study skills, time management, financial literacy, wellness, and college success strategies.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus partners to strengthen academic support networks and advocate for the needs of first-generation and underserved students.
- Conduct outreach and recruitment activities to identify and engage eligible TRIO students, including communication with prospective and continuing participants.
- Plan and support cultural, social, and educational programming that fosters belonging, engagement, and community among TRIO students.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records, advising documentation, and data to support program assessment and federal grant compliance.
- Participate in TRIO staff meetings, professional development, and conferences to enhance advising practices and program effectiveness.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Business, Office Management, Education, or a closely related field
Experience
- Minimum 1-year experience providing holistic academic advising, mentoring, and basic case management for diverse college students, especially first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students.
- Understanding of developmental education, learning strategies, and academic skill-building approaches that support student persistence and confidence.
- Working knowledge of college systems and policies, such as academic requirements, course registration, financial aid basics, and student support services.
- Familiarity with federal TRIO programs, FERPA, ADA, and related regulations that guide student support and confidentiality.
- Awareness of how to review student data and outcomes to support program improvement and help identify student needs.
- Strong advising and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate, guide, and support students through academic, personal, and financial challenges.
- Awareness of culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and equity-based practices that help create inclusive and supportive learning environments.
- Must satisfactorily complete EOU criminal and credential background check. Having a criminal history is not an automatic bar to employment.
- In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. Eastern Oregon University will not sponsor applicants for employment visas.
Preferred Qualifications
Education
- Master's in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Personnel or a related field
