Summer childcare refers to child supervision and care services provided during the summer months when school is not in session. Summer childcare often combines fun activities, educational opportunities, and social interaction to keep children engaged and safe throughout the summer break.

What are summer childcare jobs?

Summer childcare jobs involve working as a babysitter or nanny during the summer. Your duties in these temporary positions vary depending on the needs of the parents or family you work for. You typically care for children while their parents are away on vacation or otherwise occupied. You may work for a family on a full-time basis and provide services such as meal preparation and transportation. Or, you may be asked to accompany a family on vacation or live at their home for the entire summer. In all summer childcare jobs, you ensure the safety of children, participate in activities with them, and help with daily routines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer childcare provider, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Childcare Provider, you need a basic understanding of child development, safety protocols, and experience working with children, often supported by CPR/First Aid certification. Familiarity with activity planning tools, emergency contact systems, and incident reporting procedures is typically required. Patience, creativity, and strong communication skills help build trust with both children and their parents. These skills ensure a safe, engaging, and supportive environment that fosters positive experiences for children during summer programs.

What are some common challenges faced in a summer childcare position, and how can I prepare for them?

In a summer childcare role, one of the most common challenges is managing a group of energetic children with varying interests and needs, especially during outdoor activities or field trips. Flexibility, patience, and strong communication skills are essential for addressing conflicts, maintaining safety, and keeping children engaged. Preparing creative activity plans and having backup indoor options for inclement weather can help ensure a smooth day. Building positive relationships with both children and their parents will also contribute to a supportive and enjoyable work environment.

Job description

Position Type: After-School
Location: Kirkland, WA, 98033
Office: Jovie of Redmond, WA
Summary:
A bit about us: We are a warm, easygoing family in Kirkland looking for an engaging after-school nanny to support our two school-age children throughout the school year. Our family values quality time together, sharing meals around the table, and creating opportunities to connect through conversation, games, and family activities. We are looking for someone who can become a positive role model, help encourage healthy routines, and bring fresh ideas that inspire our children to stay active and engaged beyond screens. This position is a wonderful opportunity for a nanny who enjoys building meaningful relationships with older children while also providing light household support before they arrive home from school.
A bit about you: You are energetic, outgoing, and naturally connect with school-age children through creativity, humor, and genuine enthusiasm. You're the type of person who can make everyday activities fun, encourage children to try new things, and confidently set kind but consistent boundaries around routines like homework and screen time. You enjoy thinking outside the box and know how to motivate children through positive choices and engaging activities rather than simply asking if they'd like to participate. Most importantly, you're dependable, proactive, and enjoy becoming a trusted part of a family's daily routine.
What You'll Do: Your afternoons will begin before the children arrive home, allowing time to complete light household tasks such as tidying the kitchen and main living spaces, unloading or loading the dishwasher, light laundry, taking out the trash, and helping keep the home organized. After school, you'll pick up one child while the other arrives home by bus, prepare healthy after-school snacks, supervise homework and reading, and encourage engaging activities that balance creativity, outdoor play, and fun with friends. The children enjoy music, art, remote-control vehicles, video games, and spending time with family, so bringing new ideas that match their interests while expanding their horizons will be greatly appreciated. Occasional transportation to playdates or activities may also be part of the afternoon routine.: "Text NANNY to 206-752-6917 to apply and schedule your interview in under 3 minutes.
Start Date: August 31st
Duration: School year (through the end of June)
Schedule: 2:30pm-5:30pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays, 1:30pm - 5:30pm on Wednesdays
Pay: $32-35
Position Highlights:
  • Guaranteed school-year schedule through the end of June, with potential to extend into the summer if it's a good fit
  • Consistent weekday afternoon hours
  • Opportunity to build meaningful relationships with two wonderful school-age children
  • Collaborative, respectful family that values open communication
  • Light household support only, no deep cleaning required

You'll be a great fit for this nanny job if you have:
  • Previous nanny or childcare experience with school-age children
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record
  • Safe and reliable vehicle to transport children
  • Comfortable transporting children when needed
  • CPR and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Dependable, organized, and proactive
  • Able to manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining a positive attitude

Set yourself apart:
  • You naturally connect with older children and know how to make yourself relatable while maintaining healthy boundaries.
  • You're creative and can turn everyday moments into engaging activities that encourage children to step away from screens.
  • You enjoy being active and helping children discover new interests while supporting their growing independence.
  • You have experience balancing childcare with light household assistance and enjoy helping a busy family stay organized.
  • An interest in music, art, games, outdoor adventures, or other hobbies that school-age children enjoy would be a wonderful bonus.
