What is a childcare volunteer?

Childcare Volunteers are individuals who offer their time and skills to care for children in various settings, such as community centers, shelters, churches, or nonprofit organizations. Their duties can include supervising playtime, assisting with educational activities, ensuring children's safety, and supporting staff with daily routines. Volunteering in childcare helps support families and organizations by providing extra hands and attention for children, often in environments where resources are limited.

What are some common challenges faced by childcare volunteers, and how can they be effectively managed?

Childcare Volunteers often encounter challenges such as managing group dynamics among children, addressing behavioral issues, and ensuring each child's safety and well-being. Building trust with both children and staff, maintaining patience, and using positive communication techniques are key strategies to overcome these challenges. Volunteers are usually supported by experienced staff who provide guidance and feedback, helping them grow in confidence and skill. Regular training sessions and open communication with the team also support volunteers in handling new or difficult situations effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a childcare volunteer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Childcare Volunteer, you need a basic understanding of child development, safety protocols, and often a background check or relevant training in childcare. Familiarity with first aid, CPR certification, and tools for engaging children, such as educational games and activity planning systems, is commonly required. Patience, strong communication, and the ability to build trust with children and families are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure a safe, nurturing environment where children can learn and grow while parents and organizations have confidence in your care.

Job description

Employment Type: Full-Time; Temporary Position ending in February of 2027
Program Area: Policy
Reports To: Deputy Director/Chief of Staff
Full Time Salary Band: $72,000 - $78,000
Location: Flex/remote and in-Person in either Seattle, Vancouver or Yakima Office
BACKGROUND
OneAmerica (OA) organizes immigrant and refugee leaders and our allies in Washington State to build power in our communities and run campaigns that ensure immigrants are not only protected and can survive but that immigrants can thrive and are equal, valued and loved. Established in 2001 by U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, we have since grown to become a locally and nationally recognized leader in advancing immigrant, civil, and human rights. Our family of organizations consists of OneAmerica (501(c)3), OneAmerica Votes (OA) (501(c)4), OneAmerica Votes Justice Fund (State PAC), OneAmerica Votes Justice for All Fund (Federal PAC).
OA envisions a peaceful world where every person's human rights and dignity are respected, where communities appreciate differences and stand together for justice and equality, and where each person contributes to the common good. All of our work is grounded in our Theory of Change and guided by the conviction that people directly impacted should lead our movement for justice because they are best equipped to create real solutions that build lasting power. Grassroots immigrant leaders (our base) drive priorities across our organization.
You'll be stepping into an organization in a strong position: 25 years of relationship-building and political credibility, stable and growing funding, and deeply committed leadership and staff. But what makes this position truly exceptional is the nature of the fight itself. Immigrants are under attack nationally, and Washington State is where we push back, where we win, and where we're actively modeling for the rest of the country what it looks like to fully include immigrants as part of the fabric of our communities.
This is a chance to be at the center of that fight: to lead a resistance movement inside an organization committed to long-term power building and real wins for immigrants in Washington State. For the right person, there is no more exciting or meaningful place to work.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
OneAmerica is seeking a full-time, Interim Childcare Campaign Manager from July 2026 to February 2027 to provide coverage for a staff member on leave. Over the last decade, OneAmerica has worked on issues at the intersection of childcare, education and immigrant rights. The Interim Child Care Campaign Manager will help advance a growing, immigrant- and women-led effort to strengthen childcare access and economic opportunity for families across King County. Through grassroots organizing, leadership development, partnership building, and policy advocacy, this role will work alongside parents, caregivers, early learning providers, community organizations, and public sector partners to build support for Best Starts for Kids levy renewal and advance community-driven solutions.
