What is a subway operator?

Subway operators are professionals responsible for driving and operating subway trains, ensuring the safe and timely transportation of passengers. They control train speed, monitor signals, make station announcements, and respond to emergencies or unusual situations on the tracks. Subway operators also perform safety checks, report any mechanical issues, and follow strict schedules and operational procedures to maintain efficient service. Their role is crucial in keeping public transit systems running smoothly and safely.

What does a subway operator do?

As a subway operator, you operate a subway train and transport passengers throughout a subway network. In this role, you may coordinate with other operators, help passengers manage the transition from other transportation systems like trains or a city streetcar, and communicate with a central dispatcher to report any problems. You often observe signals along the tracks, make announcements, help passengers with special needs, and oversee evacuations if emergencies occur. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of this job requires mental fortitude and the ability to remain professional in upsetting or stressful situations, including dealing with problematic passengers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a subway operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Subway Operator, you need a high school diploma or equivalent, strong attention to detail, and knowledge of transit safety regulations. Familiarity with train control systems, signaling technology, and sometimes completion of specialized transit authority training programs are typically required. Excellent communication, calmness under pressure, and situational awareness help operators manage emergencies and interact with passengers effectively. These skills ensure passenger safety, efficient train operation, and reliable transit service in busy urban environments.

What are some common challenges faced by subway operators during their shifts?

Subway Operators often face challenges such as maintaining schedule adherence during peak hours, handling unexpected technical issues or track obstructions, and ensuring passenger safety during emergencies. Additionally, they must stay vigilant and focused in a fast-paced environment, communicate effectively with control centers and other crew members, and manage stress when dealing with large crowds or service disruptions. Adaptability and composure are essential for overcoming these challenges and ensuring a smooth transit experience.

Job description

JOB DETAILS
General Manager - Star Express
Toano, Virginia | Full-Time | 24-Hour Location
Pay: $24.00-$30.00 per hour + overtime + performance bonus opportunities
Typical schedule: approximately 45 hours per week
Ready to Run Your Own Store?
Star Express is a growing Virginia convenience store chain, and we're looking for a strong General Manager to lead our 24-hour Toano location, including our on-site Subway restaurant.
If you're currently an Assistant General Manager, Assistant Store Manager, Restaurant Manager, or experienced retail leader who's ready to take the next step and run your own location, we'd like to talk to you.
This is more than a position where you make schedules and keep the doors open.
We're looking for someone who takes ownership of the business - someone who can build a great team, deliver an outstanding customer experience, grow sales, control costs, and take pride in their store.
As General Manager, you'll have responsibility for the entire location - convenience store, fuel operation, and Subway - and the team that makes it successful.
What We Offer
We believe strong managers should be rewarded for strong performance.
  • $24.00-$30.00 per hour, based on experience
  • Overtime pay
  • Performance bonus opportunities
  • Typical schedule of approximately 45 hours per week
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Health insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Employee discounts
  • Advancement opportunities with a growing Virginia company

What You'll Own
Build & Lead Your Team
Recruit, train, coach, and retain a dependable team capable of successfully operating a busy 24-hour location.
Create effective schedules that support the needs of the business while managing labor.
Set clear expectations, recognize great performance, and address performance issues when necessary.
Develop Assistant Managers and Shift Managers who can successfully lead the operation when you're not in the building.
Deliver a Great Customer Experience
Set the standard for fast, friendly, and professional customer service.
Make sure the store, Subway, restrooms, fuel pumps, parking lot, and grounds are consistently clean, safe, and inviting.
Resolve customer concerns quickly and professionally.
Create the kind of store customers choose to visit again.
Run the Business
Take ownership of store sales, profitability, and controllable expenses.
Monitor sales, labor, inventory, shrink, and other key performance indicators.
Maintain strong cash controls, deposits, inventory procedures, and accurate operational paperwork.
Ensure products are in stock, properly merchandised, and presented in a way that helps grow sales.
Identify opportunities to improve the business rather than simply maintaining the status quo.
Protect company assets and maintain strong safety, security, and cash-control procedures.
Lead Our Subway Operation
Our Subway restaurant is an important part of this location and falls under the General Manager's overall responsibility.
You'll ensure the Subway operation maintains high standards for:
  • Customer service
  • Food quality and preparation
  • Food safety and sanitation
  • Staffing and training
  • Ordering and inventory
  • Food and labor cost control
  • Cleanliness
  • Brand and operational standards

You don't need to spend every minute behind the Subway counter - but as General Manager, you own its results.
Who We're Looking For
You may be a great fit if you have:
  • Management experience in convenience retail, fuel, grocery, QSR/restaurant, hospitality, or another high-volume retail environment
  • Experience hiring, training, coaching, and leading employees
  • Strong operational and organizational skills
  • Experience managing labor, inventory, and controllable expenses
  • The ability to understand store performance and make decisions based on the numbers
  • A hands-on leadership style - you're willing to jump in when your team needs you
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • High standards for cleanliness, food safety, and customer service
  • The ability to lead a business operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Flexibility to respond when the needs of the business require it

Convenience store, fuel, and/or Subway experience is a plus, but strong leadership and operating experience matter more.
What Success Looks Like
A successful Star Express General Manager builds a store where:
Customers want to come back.
Good employees want to stay.
The store is clean, safe, and well stocked.
The Subway operation delivers consistently.
Sales grow and costs are controlled.
The team can perform whether or not the General Manager is standing in the building.
Grow With Star Express
We're a growing company, and we're looking for managers who want more than just another management job.
If you're ready to take ownership of an entire operation, build a great team, and have the opportunity to advance as Star Express grows, we'd like to meet you.
Apply today for the General Manager position at Star Express in Toano, Virginia.
Star Express is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
