What is a substance abuse internship?

Substance abuse internships are supervised work experiences that allow students or recent graduates to gain practical skills in the field of addiction counseling and substance abuse treatment. These internships typically take place in rehabilitation centers, hospitals, community organizations, or mental health clinics. Interns may assist with client assessments, group therapy sessions, case management, and educational programs, all under the supervision of licensed professionals. The goal is to provide hands-on learning that prepares individuals for careers in substance abuse counseling or related fields, while also helping them fulfill licensure or degree requirements.

What responsibilities can I expect during a substance abuse internship, and how much direct client interaction is typical?

During a substance abuse internship, you can expect to support licensed counselors with tasks such as conducting intake assessments, assisting in group therapy sessions, documenting client progress, and participating in treatment planning meetings. The level of direct client interaction varies depending on the organization's policies and your educational background, but interns often have supervised opportunities to observe and gradually engage with clients. These experiences are designed to build your practical skills while ensuring client safety and confidentiality. Interns also regularly collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, which may include social workers, psychologists, and medical professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in substance abuse internships, and why are they important?

To thrive in Substance Abuse Internships, you generally need foundational knowledge in psychology, social work, or counseling, often as part of an ongoing degree program, along with a genuine interest in addiction recovery. Familiarity with documentation software, client management systems, and training in confidentiality or HIPAA protocols is typically expected. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to listen without judgment help interns build trust and rapport with clients. These competencies are crucial to effectively support individuals in recovery and contribute positively to a treatment team.

This is a remote position that provides the flexibility to create a work-life balance while making a significant impact in the lives of our clients. As a therapist, you will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing tailored treatment plans that address both addiction and co-occurring mental health challenges.

About the Organization

At Gotham Enterprises Ltd, we are committed to providing comprehensive care in a community health clinic setting. The environment is designed to be safe, supportive, and therapeutic, ensuring that both clients and staff feel valued and respected. Communication tools and virtual meeting platforms will be utilized to facilitate teamwork and maintain high-quality care standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and screenings to evaluate clients' substance abuse history and mental healthโ€”using structured tools to facilitate accurate diagnostics.
  • Collaborate with clients to develop individualized treatment plans that address both their addiction issues and any underlying mental health concerns.
  • Facilitate evidence-based individual and group therapy sessions, employing modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing.
  • Engage with other treatment team members to coordinate integrated care, ensuring a holistic approach to each client's journey toward recovery.
  • Provide education and support to clients' families, fostering their involvement in the recovery process and helping them understand the complexities of addiction.
  • Maintain detailed and compliant records of client interactions and progress, in alignment with regulatory requirements and best practices in the mental health field.
Patient Population / Client Focus

Your work will primarily focus on individuals dealing with substance use disorders, many of whom may have co-occurring mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or trauma-related issues. This role requires a deep understanding of the challenges at the intersection of addiction and mental health, and the provision of empathetic guidance to support clients on their recovery journey.

Qualifications
  • A valid license as a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist (LCMFT), Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), Licensed Clinical Psychologist (LCP), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker (LSCSW) is required.
  • A Master's or Doctoral degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field is necessary.
  • Specialized training or direct experience in addiction counseling is essential for this role.
  • Familiarity with evidence-based practices for addressing substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders is critical.
  • Demonstrated therapeutic and counseling skills with the capacity to motivate and inspire clients toward recovery.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills are necessary for effective teamwork and client engagement.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience working within a community health setting or with diverse populations dealing with addiction.
  • Prior involvement in multi-disciplinary teams focusing on mental health and substance abuse recovery.
  • Background in training or supervising less experienced staff or interns is a plus.
Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this role is USD 80,000 to 100,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additionally, Gotham Enterprises Ltd offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

  • Health insurance options to support your well-being.
  • A retirement savings plan to help secure your financial future.
  • Generous paid time off and holiday leave to rejuvenate and recharge.
  • Opportunities for professional development programs focused on addiction counseling.
  • An inclusive, supportive workplace that prioritizes employee wellness and job satisfaction.
