What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sub Welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sub Welder, you need expertise in underwater welding techniques, strong physical fitness, and a commercial diving certification. Familiarity with specialized welding equipment, underwater cutting tools, and safety systems is essential, often supported by certifications like AWS D3.6M or ADCI. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and the ability to work well under pressure are crucial soft skills in this challenging environment. These competencies ensure safety, precision, and reliability when performing critical underwater repairs and construction.

What are some unique challenges faced by Sub Welders working underwater compared to traditional welders?

Sub Welders, or underwater welders, often work in challenging and hazardous environments where visibility, temperature, and water pressure can greatly affect the welding process. Unlike traditional welding, they must contend with limited mobility due to diving equipment and the need to maintain safety protocols for both welding and diving. Communication with surface teams is also more complex, requiring clear coordination and teamwork. These factors demand strong technical skills, adaptability, and a commitment to safety.

What are Sub Welders?

Sub Welders, also known as underwater welders, are skilled professionals who perform welding tasks below the surface of water. They typically work on the construction, maintenance, and repair of marine structures such as ships, oil rigs, pipelines, and dams. This job requires specialized training in both commercial diving and welding, as well as knowledge of safety protocols due to the challenging and hazardous underwater environment. Sub Welders use a variety of welding techniques, including wet and dry welding, depending on the project requirements.

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.
The successful candidate will work hands-on in a development manufacturing facility, assisting experienced technicians and engineers with assembly, material preparation, kitting, and basic manufacturing operations. This is a learn-by-doing role - you will gain exposure to multiple manufacturing disciplines including mechanical assembly, machining, welding, and post-processing while building the foundational skills needed to advance into a specialist trade. No two days will look the same in this early-phase environment, and a willingness to jump in and contribute wherever needed is essential.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Assisting experienced technicians with mechanical assembly, sub-assembly builds, and hardware preparation tasks
  • Performing material preparation - kitting parts per the bill of materials, staging hardware at work cells, and verifying material identification and traceability
  • Supporting basic manufacturing operations under supervision - deburring, cleaning, surface preparation, basic fastening, and torquing to specification
  • Assisting with fit-up and tack welding preparation - pipe cutting, beveling, grinding, and fixture loading under welder direction
  • Operating basic shop equipment - band saws, drill presses, grinders, and hand tools following established procedures
  • Following work instructions and process documentation precisely; recording completed steps and in-process data as required
  • Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area; adhering to all PPE requirements, safety protocols, and housekeeping standards
  • Assisting with receiving and inventory tasks - unpacking deliveries, verifying packing slips, and stocking materials in designated locations
  • Supporting equipment setup and work cell preparation - moving fixtures, staging tooling, and assisting with equipment installation activities
  • Identifying and reporting quality concerns, safety hazards, or material discrepancies to the lead technician or supervisor

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 2 - 15+ years of experience in manufacturing, fabrication, construction, automotive, or related hands-on trade; vocational training or technical school coursework counts
  • Ability to read and follow written work instructions and basic engineering drawings
  • Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, and basic shop equipment
  • Willingness to learn multiple manufacturing disciplines and work across different production areas as needed
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods in a shop floor environment
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail
  • Good communication skills - able to ask questions, report issues, and work effectively in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Vocational or technical school training in manufacturing, welding, machining, or a related trade
  • Experience in aerospace, automotive, or precision industrial manufacturing
  • Familiarity with basic measurement tools - calipers, micrometers, tape measures, and dial indicators
  • Forklift certification or experience with material handling equipment (overhead cranes, pallet jacks)
  • Basic computer skills for entering data into shop floor systems
  • Experience with 5S or lean workplace practices
  • First aid, CPR, or OSHA 10/30 certification
  • Flexible to work varied shifts or overtime as the production schedule requires
