A Study Abroad Counselor helps students plan and navigate the process of studying in a foreign country. They provide guidance on program selection, application procedures, visa requirements, financial aid, and cultural preparation. Counselors also assist with pre-departure orientation and stay connected with students during their time abroad to offer support. Their goal is to ensure students have a smooth and enriching international education experience.
To thrive as a Study Abroad Counselor, you generally need a background in education, counseling, or international relations, with experience in student advising. Familiarity with application management systems, CRM software, and knowledge of visa processes or relevant certifications (like TESOL) is often expected. Excellent interpersonal, cross-cultural communication, and problem-solving skills help you build rapport with students and navigate diverse situations. These skills and qualifications are crucial to providing accurate guidance, ensuring smooth program administration, and supporting students throughout their study abroad experience.
Study Abroad Counselors often encounter challenges such as managing complex visa requirements, addressing students’ concerns about safety and adaptation, and navigating diverse international education systems. Successful counselors stay updated on global regulations, work closely with institutional partners, and provide empathetic support to students and their families. Strong organizational and communication skills help manage multiple cases simultaneously, while continual professional development ensures counselors can provide accurate, updated guidance. Team collaboration is also key, as counselors often work with faculty, administrative staff, and international partners to deliver a seamless study abroad experience.

4 days ago Requisition ID: 2732
Position: Custom Programs Manager, High School Study Abroad
Reports to:Associate Director, Custom Programs , High School Study Abroad
Department: Global Navigator High School Study Abroad
Location: US Remote
Who we are:
CIEE is a nonprofit study abroad and intercultural exchange organization that transforms lives and builds bridges between individuals and nations through study abroad and international exchange experiences that help people developskills for living in a globally interdependent and multi-cultural world.
Why work with us:
Who you are:
You will work with top private and public high schools across the US to design and deliver study abroad experiences customized for their academic objectives and operational needs. Collaborating with our U.S. sales team members and staff around the world, you will own the process of turning a program idea into a written plan, closing the contract, and ensuring a smooth pre-departure experience and exceptional program delivery.
Because High School Custom is a rapidly growing program line, you will need to be entrepreneurial, generating new business and delivering exceptional customer service to strengthen school relationships and meet sales goals. You will help schools understand the transformative impact of study abroad, develop their vision for school trips, and articulate how CIEE can help them achieve it. This role is a great fit for someone who can both think big picture and also deliver detail-oriented work amidst competing priorities, a relationship builder who also enjoys supporting strategic initiatives.
What you’ll do :
Territory Development: For your assigned regions of the U.S., work closely with sales managers to develop and implement a proactive strategy for growing Custom business. Hit ambitious goals for revenue generation and number of participants travelled.
Relationship Management: Cultivate relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including school leadership, teachers, counselors, and nonprofits. Expand relationships with our existing partners and help new partners integrate study abroad into their school’s culture.
Global Education Thought Partnership: By asking questions and getting to know their mission and values, become a thought partner to schools as they articulate or expand the role of global education in their curricular and co-curricular programs. Use your knowledge of K-12 education and experiential learning design to help schools discover ways to make global and experiential learning key components of their students’ high school experiences and ensure academic alignment.
Program Development: Work directly with CIEE staff around the world to develop program proposals. Manage the process of finalizing the itinerary, syllabi, and outcomes to ensure everything meets the school’s requests. Set clear expectations with both schools and global staff, and make sure those expectations are clearly documented in program agreements. Close the sales of school trips in cooperation with sales managers.
Operational Oversight:After programs are confirmed, support the school as they recruitstudents, book flights, and prepare for departure. Work with the finance team to invoice andreceive payments in a timely manner, and with the sales operations and enrollment teams toguide chaperones and families through pre-departure paperwork and learning.
Continuous Improvement: Debrief programs with schools and chaperones after they return home. Analize feedback survey data. Follow up on actionable items.
Strategic Initiatives: Leveraging your background and areas of expertise, support marketing, communication, networking, training, and other strategic projects to support the program line’s continued growth.
Reporting Excellence: Maintain accurate records of all sales activities and program statuses in our CRM system (e.g., Salesforce) and file management system in Microsoft Teams.
