What is a studio engineer?

Studio engineers are audio professionals responsible for operating and managing the technical aspects of recording sessions in studios. They handle equipment such as mixing consoles, microphones, and software to capture, edit, and mix sound for music, film, radio, or television. Studio engineers work closely with artists, producers, and other technicians to ensure the best possible sound quality and to bring creative visions to life. Their expertise is essential in both the recording and post-production processes.

What does a studio engineer do?

A studio engineer records, mixes, and masters the sound that creates songs, spoken word, and movie scores. If your focus is on music recording, you may work with artists and performers in the production of a single track or an album, using specialized microphones and equipment to realize their artistic vision. Other types of audio work sees you using audio technology and software to enhance existing recordings. Your responsibilities include setting up the studio for live recording sessions, which includes placing microphones, amplifiers, and other equipment. Other duties may vary, particularly if you have a specialty; for instance, if you work frequently with film or television production, you might synchronize dialogue and sound effects with video, or create new sound effects from scratch.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a studio engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Studio Engineer, you need expertise in audio engineering, sound mixing, and recording techniques, typically backed by a degree or diploma in audio production or a related field. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Pro Tools or Logic Pro, audio interfaces, and relevant certifications (such as Avid Pro Tools certification) is highly valuable. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills set top Studio Engineers apart. These competencies are essential for producing high-quality audio, collaborating with artists and producers, and maintaining efficient studio operations.

What are some common challenges faced by studio engineers when working with multiple artists or clients in a single day?

Studio engineers often juggle sessions with various artists or clients, which can present challenges such as quickly adapting to different musical styles, managing diverse technical requirements, and maintaining effective communication. Each artist may have unique expectations for their sound, workflow, and level of involvement, so being flexible and organized is crucial. Additionally, tight schedules and last-minute changes can require efficient time management and troubleshooting skills to ensure smooth sessions and high-quality results.

What is the difference between Studio Engineer vs Sound Engineer?

AspectStudio EngineerSound Engineer
CredentialsTypically holds a degree in audio engineering or related fieldMay have similar credentials, often with additional certifications in live sound or specific equipment
Work EnvironmentPrimarily works in recording studios, post-production facilities, or music production environmentsWorks in live venues, recording studios, or broadcast settings
Industry UsageCommonly employed in music, film, and television productionUsed across live events, broadcasting, and studio recordings

While both roles involve audio expertise, a Studio Engineer mainly focuses on recording, editing, and mixing in controlled studio settings. A Sound Engineer often works in live environments or broadcast settings, handling sound reinforcement and live mixing. The roles overlap in technical skills but differ in work environment and specific responsibilities.

Are studio engineers in demand?

Studio engineers are in demand in the audio and recording industry, especially as demand for high-quality content grows across music, film, and media production. Employment opportunities often depend on technical skills, familiarity with digital audio workstations, and industry experience, with job growth expected to be steady in many regions.

Job description

Summary At Varex Imaging, our Enterprise Services team supports the technology platforms that keep the business running, from enterprise applications and engineering software to databases, infrastructure, automation, and collaboration tools. As our environment continues to grow, we're looking for an experienced Systems Engineer to help drive some of our most technically challenging and strategic initiatives. This is a hands‑on engineering position focused on database administration, application infrastructure, enterprise monitoring, automation, and complex software platforms. You'll play a key role in improving reliability, reducing operational risk, and building solutions that make technology services more efficient and scalable across the organization. If you enjoy solving complex technical problems, automating manual processes, and partnering with stakeholders to deliver impactful technology solutions, this role offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference.

Job Description
  • Database, Server Infrastructure & Application Upgrades (Primary Focus)
  • Administer and support Microsoft SQL Server environments, including performance tuning, backup and recovery, upgrades, access management, and new environment deployments.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for database and infrastructure-related issues.
  • Own OS and application upgrade projects across 20+ server-hosted applications, validating compatibility and coordinating downtime so systems stay current and supportable.
  • Manage supporting infrastructure tools such as Cohesity, license servers, and OnlineDTR.
  • Enterprise Application Monitoring Contribute to expanding enterprise application monitoring (e.g., Zabbix) as capacity allows, alongside the primary database and infrastructure workload.
  • Engineering Software & Repository Governance Deploy and configure engineering/CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MATLAB, ANSYS, LabVIEW, Minitab, and similar) as project needs arise.
  • Partner with engineering stakeholders to scope these projects and communicate realistic timelines.
  • Establish baseline governance for GitHub and GitLab as capacity allows — repository standards, access controls, and administrative permissions — building toward fuller policy over time.
  • License Provisioning & AI Automation Design automated provisioning workflows (e.g., API-triggered access into licensing groups) for high-volume software, partnering with the team's licensing coordinator.
  • Contribute to AI agent and workflow automation using Microsoft Copilot Studio, as a secondary contribution to the team's broader AI roadmap rather than a primary ownership area.
  • Collaborate with technology and business teams to identify opportunities where automation and AI can improve efficiency and user experience.
  • Operational Excellence Create and maintain technical documentation, standards, and operational runbooks.
  • Serve as a technical resource for infrastructure, application, and database initiatives.
  • Provide backup coverage and technical depth across critical systems to improve overall resiliency and reduce single points of failure.
Required Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in systems engineering, infrastructure engineering, database administration, or a related technical role.
  • Strong hands‑on experience administering Microsoft SQL Server environments, including performance tuning, backup and recovery, security, and access management.
  • Experience supporting and deploying enterprise applications in a production environment.
  • Proficiency with scripting and automation technologies such as PowerShell and/or Python.
  • Experience integrating systems through APIs and enterprise automation platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building or administering solutions within Microsoft Copilot Studio.
  • Familiarity with an enterprise monitoring platform (Zabbix, SolarWinds, Datadog, Nagios, or similar).
  • Experience administering Git‑based version control platforms (GitHub and/or GitLab), including repository access controls and governance policy.
  • Demonstrated interest and aptitude for evaluating and piloting emerging AI tools for enterprise use.
  • Knowledge of enterprise AI platforms such as Microsoft Copilot, GitHub Copilot, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with Jira Service Management and Jira automation.
  • Experience deploying or supporting engineering and CAD software platforms.
  • Familiarity with enterprise backup and recovery technologies, including Cohesity.
  • Experience working within manufacturing, healthcare, medical device, or other regulated environments.
