Studio Technician Jobs (NOW HIRING)

Company Description Studio 89 - HV is a community-focused ceramics studio located in Highland, New York, offering hands-on classes for all ages and skill levels. The studio provides a welcoming environment where beginners and experienced artists can explore ceramics, develop techniques, and express creativity. Classes and open studio sessions are designed to foster learning, collaboration, and artistic growth. Studio 89 - HV values inclusivity and aims to make ceramics accessible, engaging, and enjoyable for the local community.

Basic Agreements between Studio 89 Owners and Technicians 

Studio Technicians agree to follow these position requirements:

Arrive on time for scheduled shifts. 

• If you will be late for a shift, notify the person awaiting you at the studio. 
• If you are late to open, notify Amy or Sarah. 
• Please avoid being late as it may inconvenience staff, students, or clients.

Complete each step in the Opening and/or Closing Procedures 

• For mid-shifts, coordinate with the team member before and/or after you.

Studio tasks 

• The Task List is posted on the wall by the doorway to the back. Start with basic daily tasks and try to get to a few of the weekly or monthly tasks as time allows. 
• There will be times that Sarah has specific assignments - communicate with her on how to prioritize your time as needed. 

Be a friendly face and answer questions from Open Studio students. 

• Don’t worry if you can’t answer questions with precision. 
• Don't pretend to know what you don't. 
• If unsure, use your and the student's combined knowledge to decide the best action, method or technique, which may involve waiting for a more skilled person.  

Welcome arrivals and use Squarespace to check out students and customers. 

• Greet anyone who enters the studio. 
• If they are a customer encourage them to look around, ask questions as needed and to let you know if they need anything. Be ready to check them out following the Check Out Procedure steps. 
• When students are ready to pay for firing fees, be available to check them out.
• Make sure that the pieces were correctly measured and the size of the pieces matches the fees.
• Make sure to initial in all the places and that the student knows where the piece goes.

Stay in communication with the team.

• We have varying levels of knowledge among our team. Ask questions, share insights. Let’s grow our knowledge base together. 
• If something feels great, let others know. If something feels off or unsatisfactory, find a way to share it tactfully. 

Studio Owners agree to provide these benefits:

Provide mentorship

• Amy and Sarah are committed to helping Studio Technicians develop their ceramics knowledge and pottery skills.  

Provide a key and studio access

• Technicians have keys to the studio to open and close for shifts. They also have access to the studio daily from 7:00 AM to 12:00 AM. Technicians can work during classes but must defer to the instructor's space needs. 

Shelves to store Items

• Each assistant has 3 shelves to store tools and pieces in progress.

Reduced cost access to classes and workshops as space allows

• Owners and assistants work together on a case-by-case basis to help make classes and workshops accessible to assistants.

Option to sell work in the gallery

• We encourage staff to display and sell their artwork in the studio’s shared gallery space at a 60/40 split - you get 60%, the studio gets 40%. 
• You are responsible for setting your own prices, although you are welcome to use the work already on display to gauge what price would be appropriate for our target audience.

Collaboration with Studio 89 on social media

• We encourage you to post your work and expand your outreach via social media. Take advantage of our local, community-based social media following by tagging and adding Studio 89 as a collaborator on your posts (this is mutually beneficial for us too!).

Studio 89 Technicians' compensation is calculated at a base rate of $20 per hour. Minimum 10 hours a week

• Total paid hours are calculated and paid by check at the end of each month. 
• Technicians are paid as contractors and must submit a completed W-9 Tax Form within the first two weeks of joining our team.
