As of Aug 26, 2026, the average hourly pay for student truck driver in the United States is $21.21, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.79 and $21.63 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a student truck driver?

A student truck driver job is an entry-level position in which you can gain the skills and experience needed to become a truck driver while also earning money. Typically, companies hire student truck drivers that have recently obtained their commercial driver's license (CDL), but some companies offer CDL courses as well. You have the opportunity to gain the experience needed to secure a job, and the trucking company is able to help new employees meet their standards. Your primary duty is learning and honing your skills by operating a truck under the guidance of a seasoned driver. While working as a student driver, you either receive a flat fee per week or earn a lowered wage until training is complete. You should familiarize yourself with the company’s specific protocol, as well as industry standards so that you can easily transition into a full-time truck driver position.

What kind of support and mentorship can student truck drivers expect during their training period?

Student truck drivers typically receive support from experienced trainers who mentor them throughout the training period, both in the classroom and on the road. Most trucking companies pair student drivers with seasoned professionals for hands-on learning, offering guidance on safety, compliance, and real-world driving scenarios. Frequent check-ins, feedback sessions, and access to resources such as online modules or company hotlines are common. This structured mentorship helps new drivers build confidence and develop critical skills before transitioning to solo routes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a student truck driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Student Truck Driver, you need a high school diploma or GED, a clean driving record, and the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) through formal training. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and vehicle inspection tools is typically required. Strong attention to safety, time management, and good communication skills help you excel during training and on the road. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure safe operations, regulatory compliance, and a successful transition to professional driving.

What is the difference between Student Truck Driver vs Commercial Truck Driver?

AspectStudent Truck DriverCommercial Truck Driver
CredentialsLearner's permit, CDL trainingValid CDL license
Work EnvironmentTraining vehicles, supervised routesFull-time driving, long hauls
Employer & IndustryTraining companies, trucking schoolsLogistics, freight companies

Student Truck Drivers are in training, focusing on gaining skills and obtaining their CDL license. Commercial Truck Drivers have completed training and are licensed to operate trucks independently. The main difference lies in experience, licensing status, and job responsibilities, with students still learning and drivers handling full routes.

How to get a student truck driver job with no experience?

To become a student truck driver with no experience, you typically need to complete a commercial driver’s license (CDL) training program, which provides the necessary skills and certification. Many companies offer paid or unpaid training programs for beginners, and having a clean driving record and good safety skills can improve your chances of employment. Once certified, you can apply for entry-level positions that often require only a high school diploma or equivalent.
