Job description
By working at Harvard University, you join a vibrant community that advances Harvard's world-changing mission in meaningful ways, inspires innovation and collaboration, and builds skills and expertise. We are dedicated to creating a diverse and welcoming environment where everyone can thrive.
Why join Harvard Medical School?
Harvard Medical School's mission is to nurture a diverse, inclusive community dedicated to alleviating suffering and improving health and well-being for all through excellence in teaching and learning, discovery and scholarship, and service and leadership.
You'll be at the heart of biomedical discovery, education, and innovation, working alongside world-renowned faculty and a community dedicated to improving human health. This is more than a job - it's an opportunity to shape the future of medicine.
About the MEDscience Program:
HMS MEDscience's mission is to inspire and empower a rising generation of STEM leaders. Our program immerses students in realistic and dynamic simulated medical emergencies that transform the way that students approach and solve problems. Our vision is that all students, regardless of background, education, or zip code, should have equal opportunities in education and the sciences. Our program immerses students in realistic and dynamic simulated medical emergencies that promote teamwork and problem-solving skills. HMS MEDscience engages over 4,000 high school students (including nearly 1,200 Boston Public School students) through school-year and summer programs.
HMS MEDscience has an opening for an experienced team teacher for its high school biology-based enrichment program serving a diverse population of students. This lead teacher will teach up to 3-4 classes per day in a co-teaching team. They will also serve as the primary point of contact for partner teachers at a wide range of school partners, with responsibility for curriculum alignment, program scheduling and logistics, and oversight of all educators involved in program delivery (including co-teachers, part-time staff, and volunteers).
Teacher/Program Coordinators typically manage 1-2 outside of projects/programs in addition to their direct classroom/partnership management responsibilities. These projects could include management of a particular curriculum area or an operational function (such as scheduling/staffing, inventory management/procurement for program supplies and equipment, or management/analysis of program data). These projects will be overseen by a member of MEDscience's leadership team, but this role will operate with a high degree of independence in planning and implementing projects and making strategic recommendations to leadership.
Teacher/Program Coordinators also play an important role in training new teachers. This includes a combination of one-on-one and small group training, observation, and post-session debriefs. This team member will work effectively within a culture inclusive of individuals across a wide range of backgrounds, styles, abilities, and motivations, and appreciate and leverage the capabilities, insights, and ideas of all individuals. This role will focus primarily on MEDscience's clinical program but may have the opportunity to teach other program areas (including laboratory science, forensic science, and biomedical engineering) over time.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead Teacher:
- Lead teaches in a co-teaching team.
- Accountable for decision making surrounding the planning and delivery of semester-long and module programming throughout the schoolyear and across 11 week-long summer programs.
- Delivers interactive lesson plans to students using the MEDscience pedagogy and in alignment with program goals of critical thinking, problem solving, building teamwork, communication skills, developing personal health literacy, and continued interest in STEM fields.
- Adapting teaching methods and materials to meet the interest and learning styles of students while staying in alignment with MEDscience pedagogy
Partnership Coordination:
- Coordinate programming for partnering high school programs. Serve as primary point of contact with partner teachers. This includes designing individualized program curriculum, building a curriculum calendar, managing logistics, and overseeing a range of educators involved in program delivery (including part-time staff and volunteers).
- Updates program leadership on partnerships and make recommendations for improvements.
Project Management:
- Manage 1-2 outside of projects/programs in addition to their direct classroom/partnership management responsibilities. These projects could include management of a particular curriculum area or an operational function (such as scheduling/staffing, inventory management/procurement for program supplies and equipment, or collection/analysis of program data).
- Responsible for project planning and implementation and communication with project team, including making strategic recommendations to program leadership.
Teacher Training:
Contributes to training of new teachers by leading small group training, observation, and post-session debriefs, which provide opportunities for feedback.
Working Conditions:
- Must be able to teach 3-4 in-person sessions each day (75 minutes/session).
Physical Requirements:
- Requires assisting in set-up of simulation equipment and clinical skills training, which can include lifting and carrying objects of moderate weight.
As part of your application, we recommend including a cover letter that will help us better understand your qualifications and background. This can provide valuable insight into your experience and interest in the role.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
