Position Summary Information
General Summary
The Student Intern - Historical Archiving will help bridge the gap between WSSC Water's past and it's future. The Student Intern will work directly with historical records, physical artifacts, and sensitive documents to ensure their long-term survival and accessibility.
Essential Functions
1. Archival Processing and Cataloging: Inventory Management (sort, arrange, and describe unprocessed physical collections); Data Entry (create and update digital finding aids and metadata records to improve searchability); Physical Rehousing (research/advise on best storage methods for fragile documents and artifacts).
2. Digitization Support: Identify high-priority items for digital scanning based on physical fragility or historical significance; review previously digitized records for format, accessibility, and searchability.
3. Preservation Research & Advising: review current storage methods and advise on improvements/changes needed. Create a recommendation for the ongoing preservation of historical items.
Other Functions
If time allows, digitization of high-priority items.
Work Environment And Physical Demands
* Work is performed in a business casual office setting
* Lifting, stooping, kneeling, and bending is required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Copying, creating, and managing computer files
Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
Completion of at least 12 credits of college coursework.
Additional Requirements
Proficiency in MS Office products, particularly Excel.
Preferences
Enrollment in Information Science (MLIS), History, Public History, Museum Studies, or related discipline.
Salary Commensurate with education and experience
