Job description

Chief Objective of Position

The Director is responsible for the oversight, planning, and strategic management of a comprehensive focused student support system within the Division of Student Affairs. The Director is responsible for identifying accommodations, support services and resources that provide qualifying students with disabilities access to educational programs. The Director, has the primary responsibility of creating, implementing, and monitoring a care plan for students of concern. As part of the Division of Student Affairs leadership team, the Director will provide leadership in the development of policies, procedures, programs, and services; provide guidance to the overall student experience; and support the mission and vision that define Christopher Newport University.

Work Tasks
  • Responsible for reviewing and monitoring the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504, 508 of the Rehabilitation Act for students. Maintain a working knowledge of federal and state regulations concerning students with disabilities.
  • Using independent judgement, review and assess documentation to determine qualifications of reasonable accommodations for students.
  • Serve as a point of contact and resource for enrolled and prospective students and their parents/guardians, university faculty and staff regarding Student Disability policies and procedures.
  • Using independent judgement, responsible for creating, implementing, and monitoring a care plan for students of concern; ensuring on-going case management and record keeping. Keeps accurate data and prepares reports as needed.
  • Provide leadership in the development of policies, procedures, programs, and services;
  • Supervises, trains, and guides two Assistant Directors of Student Accessibility and Case Manager and the Testing and Accommodation Coordinator; provide on-going direction and annual evaluations.
  • Maintain the database system for tracking students with disabilities and requests for accommodations, Maxient; prepares reports as needed. Provides oversight for Register Blast (accommodation testing software).
  • Direct policies and processes for the University’s Student Testing Center for students with accommodations. This may include assisting with proctoring individual assessments or consulting with the Testing Coordinator on complex cases.
  • Direct strategic, long-term goals for disability services that align with the mission of the Division of Student Affairs and the University.
  • Consult and collaborate with administrators, faculty, community leaders, and other resource persons to provide or arrange educational and training opportunities surroundingADA/504 , disability related issues, and other topics surrounding students of concern.
  • Required to assist, and provide support for university wide programs to include, but not limited to: Orientation, Commencement, Move-In, Admission events. Provides content-specific presentations and trainings as applicable.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of appropriate assessment instruments that are administered on a regular and consistent basis. Evaluates results and determines “best practices” and necessary modifications.
  • Serves as a member of the Behavioral Intervention Team for Students (BITS) and other early alert or case management coordinated efforts. Supports the Threat Assessment Team on an as-needed basis.
  • Assists in the University’s response to students in crisis or to general crises affecting the university. This may include working with individual students in response to their needs or serving as part of a team of professionals assigned to work cooperatively in response to a crisis and/or emergency (e.g., Threat Assessment Team and/or the Emergency Response Staff, etc.).
  • Using independent judgment and discretion, plans; budgets resources; develops procedures by interpreting guidelines, policies, regulations, and laws; provides direction in the daily operation to ensure the University’s goals and objectives are achieved.
  • As a director in the Student Affairs team, works closely with the Vice President of Student Affairs/Dean of Students, Associate Vice President of Student Affairs, and other directors to shape a positive university experience for students in all areas of student life, student engagement, student success, and student learning.
  • This position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty.
  • Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees.   • Follow workplace safety regulations and adhere to applicable standards, processes, and programs established for your position.
    • Report unsafe work conditions to your supervisor.
    • Immediately report work-related incidents to your supervisor and participate in accident investigation requests.
    • Promote a safe and healthy work environment by ensuring the implementation of safety regulations and applicable standards, processes, and programs established for employees under your supervision.
    • Ensure employees under your supervision are trained in safety standards and procedures for their positions.
    • Report work-related incidents within 24 hours according to the procedures established by the university, state and federal guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) related to position
  • Knowledge of laws affecting students with disabilities in higher education, including the Americans with Disabilities Act and Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act;
  • Ability to read and interpret assessment materials to determine what constitutes reasonable accommodations to afford students the ability to access educational programs;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations;
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills;
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills;
  • Skilled in the use of computers to include database proficiency;
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to work a schedule that can accommodate some weekend and evenings.
Required Education
  • Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s degree with work experience that equates to an advanced degree.

  • Master’s degree in education and/or special education, higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, social work, or related discipline required at time of application.
Experience Required
  • Professional experience in providing direct service to individuals with disabilities in an educational setting.

Salary Information:

Salary $92,116 to $105,000 Commensurate with Education and Experience
