Based on 55 frontline employees who took The Breakroom Quiz
Job description
Duke University was created in 1924 through an indenture of trust by James Buchanan Duke. Today, Duke is regarded as one of America's leading research universities. Located in Durham, North Carolina, Duke is positioned in the heart of the Research Triangle, which is ranked annually as one of the best places in the country to work and live. Duke has more than 15,000 students who study and conduct research in its 10 undergraduate, graduate and professional schools. With about 40,000 employees, Duke is the third largest private employer in North Carolina, and it now has international programs in more than 150 countries.
Be You.
At Duke, we celebrate individuality and the unique perspectives that each member of our community brings. As a Bilingual Research Data Technician II, you will play a vital role in advancing innovative research designed to improve the health and well-being of children and families. You will join a collaborative team dedicated to evaluating evidence-based interventions that strengthen family relationships, promote healthy child development, and connect families to the resources they need to thrive.
This position supports two groundbreaking longitudinal studies:
ABC Impact Study (75%)
Although numerous evidence-based early childhood home visiting intervention programs have been implemented at small scale in community settings to reduce maltreatment and promote early relational health, no home visiting intervention has demonstrated population impact to lower child maltreatment rates. Most programs take a long-term, intensive approach serving self-selected high-risk families (secondary prevention), while only a few programs utilize a brief universal approach to support all families prior to any maltreatment exposure (primary prevention). Implemented in isolation, both approaches face significant barriers to population impact. To address these barriers while leveraging the strengths of each approach, this study will draw families from the entire population of births in a community using an empirically supported light touch, universal program (Family Connects; FC) to screen and recruit eligible families for an intensive, longer-term home visiting program (Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up; ABC). The goal is to determine the impact of this collaborative approach on parental sensitivity, parental functioning, child functioning, and child maltreatment.
Community Navigation (25%)
During some of the most critical years of child development, prenatally through age three, families spend significant time and resources navigating a fragmented system of care. Some families can get needed resources for their children, while others cannot for a variety of reasons. Community Navigation charts a new vision that will offer all families universal screening to connect them to the right resources at the right time through a series of universal, light-touch engagements beginning prenatally and continuing through age 5. The goal is to engage all pregnant persons, learn about their strengths and needs for support and, when needs are identified, connect families to matched community resources for longer term support.
In collaboration with colleagues in Guilford County, the Center for Child and Family Policy (CCFP) is overseeing a randomized control trial involving 800 Durham County families to assess the implementation and impact of prenatal and postnatal Community Navigation. The goal is to determine the efficacy of the model in improving multiple domains of child and family well-being, including connections to community resources and services, parenting and parent mental health, child social-emotional and behavioral development, and kindergarten readiness.
Be Bold.
As a member of our research team, you will support the impact evaluation of both studies by recruiting, consenting, interviewing, and engaging English- and Spanish-speaking families while ensuring the highest standards of research quality and participant experience.
What You'll Do
Participant Recruitment and Engagement (35%)
- Coordinate and participate in a variety of duties to assist investigators in the implementation of the research study.
- Screen, recruit, and obtain informed consent from families in English and Spanish to participate in the study at various time points.
- Schedule family interviews in English and Spanish via email, phone, text, as well as letter and/or in-person scheduling when required. This will require time in the field as well as the use of internet-based databases when family contact information is no longer valid.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of families' participation status and scheduling calendar.
- Utilize secure, web-based systems (Epic, TransUnion) to obtain updated participant contact information and/or information about Potential Adverse Events.
Data Collection & Assessments (30%)
- Conduct phone, video, in-home, and/or web-based family interviews in English and Spanish. Duties will include scheduling visits, conducting interviews, administering standardized assessments, and recording interview responses when required.
- Complete interview data entry via tablet or computer and appropriately manage data transfer when required while following protocol and ensuring protection of participant confidentiality.
- Prepare and maintain research materials, equipment, and study supplies needed for participant visits.
Data Management & Quality Control (15%)
- Help manage and update study databases and surveys in Qualtrics and REDCap.
- Analyze and interpret collected data to support research activities and reporting requirements.
- Contribute to the ongoing collection of administrative records and the writing of project technical reports, as needed.
- Track participant enrollment, visit completion, and follow-up status using study databases and tracking systems.
- Assist with routine data cleaning and quality assurance activities.
Reporting & Progress Tracking (10%)
- Document payment information for participants and process payments as needed.
- Assist with translation of study documents from English to Spanish.
- Help prepare Duke University Health System (DUHS) and Duke University Institutional Review Board (IRB) materials.
- Perform regulatory tasks required for study compliance with DUHS and Duke University guidelines.
Project Collaboration (10%)
- Attend and contribute to project meetings and other meetings held at CCFP as appropriate.
- Engage directly with project leadership regarding project deliverables, continuous quality improvement efforts, etc.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
- Contribute to continuous quality improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to improve research processes, participant engagement, and data quality.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

- Previous experience supporting research studies and/or randomized controlled trials.
- Experience with Excel, SAS, SPSS, STATA, or other statistical software.
