Structural engineering is a branch of civil engineering that involves the design, construction, and repair of many different types of structures. The job of a structural engineer is to act as a consultant to architects and contractors throughout the construction project, offering expert advice on technical problems. Structural engineers are typically contracted on projects involving sports arenas, bridges, large buildings, or any other weight-bearing structure. On a day-to-day basis, a structural engineer may assist the head architect with initial layout and design of a structure, including plans for maintenance or overall remodels. They calculate loads, such as wind, snow, and earthquake forces, to determine which structural system is safest. Some structural engineers specialize in demolition and are responsible for ensuring projects are carried out safely and without damage to surrounding structures. Others specialize in oil drilling machinery, aircraft and shipbuilding vehicle design, or temporary structure builds.
| Aspect | Structural Engineer | Civil Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires a bachelor's degree in structural or civil engineering, PE license | Requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, PE license |
| Work Environment | Focuses on designing and analyzing building structures, often in office and construction sites | Works on infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, and water systems, in offices and field sites |
| Industry Usage | Specialized within construction, architecture, and structural design firms | Broader industry scope including transportation, environmental, and urban planning |
Structural engineers primarily focus on designing and analyzing building frameworks to ensure safety and stability, while civil engineers work on a wider range of infrastructure projects. Both roles require similar credentials and often collaborate, but their core responsibilities and project types differ.

· Demonstrated expertise in steel, concrete, and foundation design
· Experience with existing structure restoration and repair applications preferred.
· Experience leading medium-to-large, complex projects with minimal guidance
· Significant field exposure to construction and restoration projects, with the ability to adapt designs to field conditions
Technical Skills
· Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
· 4+ years of experience with structural analysis software (RISA 3D, PLS, FEA software, etc.) required
· Strong proficiency in interpreting analysis results and making independent engineering decisions
· Experience with existing structure repairs/modifications highly preferred
· Familiarity with AutoCAD or other drafting/modeling software preferred
Professional Development
· Professional Engineer (PE) license required
Field Readiness
· Willingness to travel to project and construction sites and work outdoors in varying conditions as needed
Soft Skills
· Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical findings to non-technical stakeholders
· Proven leadership, mentoring, and coaching skills for developing junior engineering staff
· Ability to balance multiple priorities and deliver results under deadlines
· Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous professional growth
Job Description
Design & Analysis
· Review data collected during field assessments of transmission structures
· Assign standard restorations and repairs for existing steel, concrete, and foundation structures
· Design up to complex adjustments to standard restorations, including bolted, welded, and post-installed concrete connections
· Design complex, unique, or one-off restorations and repairs with little to no guidance or direction
· Review results from structural models and perform final interpretation, providing direction and engineering decisions based on results
Drawing & Documentation
· Review construction drawings for accuracy and provide markups or changes to align with design requirements
· Execute PE review of standard and non-standard designs before construction review and material orders
· Ensure all deliverables meet safety, quality, and compliance standards
Mentorship & Technical Guidance
· Mentor and provide direction to less experienced staff on both standard and non-standard design practices
· Review calculations and analyses of less experienced staff, providing feedback prior to final PE review
· Contribute to departmental knowledge sharing and best practice development
Project Oversight

· Oversee multiple small to medium-scale projects at a time.
· Provide technical leadership throughout project execution, ensuring deliverables, budgets, and schedules are met
· Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve technical and construction challenges
Field Support
· Travel to construction sites as needed to observe field conditions and provide direction for onsite adjustments
· Translate field observations into actionable design changes, ensuring constructability and safety
· Serve as a primary engineering point of contact during construction for complex or unique situations
