Job description

Job Title: Structural Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on structural analysis and design for transportation infrastructure and related structural projects. You will prepare detailed plans, specifications, quantity calculations, and cost estimates while supporting bridge inspections and condition assessments. The position involves using industry-standard design software, contributing to constructability reviews and value engineering, and collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, well-documented projects.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural analysis and design for transportation infrastructure, including bridges and related structures.
  • Prepare detailed plans, specifications, quantity calculations, and cost estimates for a variety of civil and structural engineering projects.
  • Conduct bridge inspections and develop Bridge Condition Reports to assess structural integrity and recommend appropriate actions.
  • Utilize industry-standard software tools for structural analysis, design, and preparation of construction documents.
  • Support constructability reviews and value engineering efforts to optimize designs for cost, safety, and long-term performance.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, surveyors, environmental scientists, and contractors in a multidisciplinary project environment.
  • Ensure that all project documentation, reports, drawings, and technical files meet high standards of quality and accuracy.
  • Assist the project engineer in addressing technical and coordination challenges to meet client project delivery goals.
  • Participate in projects involving the design and construction of bridges, buildings, and other civil structures.

Essential Skills

Work Environment

This position is based in a consulting engineering firm with offices in Warrenville, IL and Champaign, IL. The organizational structure is flat, with several shareholder/principals leading market sectors such as structural engineering, transportation, site development, and environmental services while actively mentoring junior staff. You will work as part of a structural team of seven engineers distributed between the Warrenville and Champaign offices. The firm has grown steadily and organically over more than 30 years, maintains low turnover, and invests heavily in training and development, including tuition reimbursement for employees who wish to continue their education. The work environment emphasizes collaboration among licensed engineers, surveyors, environmental scientists, and CAD/GIS specialists, using modern design and drafting tools to deliver high-quality civil and structural engineering solutions.
