Position: Structural Designer III

Location: Forest Park, GA
Duration: 1 Year
Work Schedule: Hybrid – Monday through Thursday in office, Friday remote
Travel: Approximately 25% for field meetings and site visits

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Structural Designer III to support Transmission and Distribution Substation Design, as well as Transmission Line Design projects. This position is responsible for producing structural design drawings, specifications, and material requirements for structural steel, concrete foundations, and related substation and transmission infrastructure.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in structural steel detailing, AutoCAD, 3D modeling, steel fabrication coordination, reinforced concrete design, and structural design standards. This role requires strong attention to safety, quality, scheduling, and cost control.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce structural engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements.
  • Support structural design work for Transmission and Distribution substation projects.
  • Provide design support to the Transmission Line Design Group as needed.
  • Develop drawings for structural steel, reinforced concrete foundations, and related infrastructure.
  • Prepare and review structural steel detailing drawings.
  • Coordinate with engineers, drafters, fabrication shops, internal customers, and project teams.
  • Answer fabrication shop questions and help resolve structural design or detailing issues.
  • Support project schedules, quality requirements, safety practices, and cost objectives.
  • Coordinate multiple projects with competing deadlines and priorities.
  • Manage and support workload of drafters as needed.
  • Participate in field meetings, site visits, and project reviews.
  • Mentor team members and help teach job-related design skills.

Required Qualifications

  • AutoCAD training, experience, or certification required.
  • 10+ years of structural steel detailing experience, including commercial, industrial, stairs, handrails, or related structures.
  • Experience as a structural steel detailer and checker.
  • High-level experience using AutoCAD.
  • Experience communicating with steel fabrication shops and resolving shop-related issues.
  • Working knowledge of AISC, ASCE, and ACI codes.
  • Working knowledge of AWS welding standards.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA codes as they relate to steel design.
  • Experience analyzing steel connections.
  • Experience with reinforced concrete design.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with standard Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical issues clearly and simply.
  • Strong problem-solving, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and build relationships at all levels.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with varying priorities and deadlines.
  • Customer-focused mindset with a willingness to meet customer needs and solicit feedback.
  • Ability to work successfully in a hybrid/remote environment with reliable internet access.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two-year degree from a technical school or university preferred.
  • Experience creating substation drawings is a plus.
  • Experience as a contractor or consultant to Georgia Power, Alabama Power, or Southern Company is a plus.
  • Experience using 3D modeling software such as SDS Design Data, Tekla, or similar software.
  • Design experience with transmission structures is a plus, but not required.
