The Structural Designer III is a seniorlevel individual contributor responsible for developing accurate, fabricationready structural and mechanical design packages for heavy industrial equipment. This role is intended for an experienced designer transitioning into an expertlevel structural designer, capable of independent technical judgment, minimal supervision, and ownership of complex designs from concept through fabrication.

This position includes the design of hot exhaust and flue gas ducting systems associated with pollution control equipment located downstream of large industrial combustion sources, including combustion turbines, boilers, and fired heaters. The successful candidate understands the unique challenges of hightemperature, largescale ducting systems where thermal movement, fabrication practicality, and longterm durability are critical.

This job description represents only the primary areas of responsibility; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the department.

To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to execute each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop complete project design packages, including 3D CAD models, fabrication drawings, and material takeoffs for heavy industrial equipment and ducting systems.
  • Design largescale hot exhaust and flue gas ducting, including casings, transitions, and structural plate components for pollution control applications.
  • Independently evaluate project inputs for completeness and accuracy; identify missing, conflicting, or unclear information and drive resolution with Project Engineering, Sales, Supply Chain and Project Management.]
  • Apply sound structural and mechanical design principles to account for thermal expansion, operating temperature, mechanical loading, and cyclic service in ducting layouts and details.
  • Develop fabricationready details that consider material selection, plate thickness, weld joint configuration, and shop versus field fabrication constraints.
  • Coordinate ducting interfaces with pollution control and process equipment such as SCR reactors, stacks, dampers, expansion joints, and related components.
  • Produce drawings required for customer approval, material procurement, and fabrication, with strong attention to constructability, installation sequencing, and maintenance access.
  • Collaborate closely with Sales, Project Engineering, and Project Management to ensure designs meet contractual requirements, technical standards, and project schedules.
  • Perform and verify geometric and material calculations (lengths, distances, angles, areas, volumes, and weights) to support design accuracy and material takeoffs.
  • Review peer drawings and models to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to internal standards; provide technical feedback and guidance as appropriate.
  • Support document control, revision management, and issuance of project drawings to customers and fabricators.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of drafting standards, modeling practices, and design workflows.

Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in ComputerAided Design, Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Seven (7) or more years of progressive experience in industrial structural or mechanical design, preferably in heavy industrial or process equipment environments.
  • Demonstrated experience designing industrial casing plate ductwork and structural members.
  • Experience designing largescale industrial ducting systems, preferably operating at elevated temperatures.
  • Strong proficiency in 3D modeling and development of fabricationready drawings.
  • Solid understanding of geometry, spatial reasoning, and material quantity calculations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor or comparable 3D mechanical design software.
  • Experience with hot exhaust or flue gas ducting for combustion or pollution control systems.
  • Experience coordinating designs with pollution control equipment such as SCRs, baghouses, or ESPs.
  • Familiarity with thermal expansion considerations in large plate and duct structures.
  • Knowledge of butt weld, socket weld, and threaded piping systems.
  • Working knowledge of P&IDs, including interpretation and design evaluation.
  • Understanding of industrial fabrication and erection practices, including weld detailing for cyclic or hightemperature service
