What is a Structural Analyst?

A Structural Analyst is an engineering professional who evaluates and analyzes the strength, stability, and rigidity of structures such as buildings, bridges, or aircraft. They use mathematical models, computer simulations, and physical testing to ensure that structures can withstand various loads and stresses without failing. Their work is essential in the design phase to verify that safety standards are met, and they often collaborate closely with architects and other engineers. Structural Analysts help prevent structural failures by identifying potential weaknesses and recommending improvements.

What is the difference between Structural Analyst vs Structural Engineer?

AspectStructural AnalystStructural Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, certifications varyBachelor's or master's in civil or structural engineering, PE license often required
Work EnvironmentOffice-based, using analysis software to evaluate structuresDesign, planning, site visits, and project management
Industry UsageCommon in consulting firms, construction, and engineering servicesDesign and construction firms, infrastructure projects

While both roles involve structural analysis, a Structural Analyst primarily focuses on evaluating existing structures using software, whereas a Structural Engineer designs and oversees new structures. The roles often overlap in skills and industry settings, but their core responsibilities differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Analyst, you need a solid background in structural engineering principles, finite element analysis, and a relevant engineering degree, often with a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with analysis software such as ANSYS, SAP2000, or Abaqus, as well as CAD tools, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure precise analysis, effective collaboration, and the safety and reliability of structural designs.

What are some common challenges a Structural Analyst faces when working on multidisciplinary engineering projects?

Structural Analysts often collaborate with architects, mechanical engineers, and construction teams, which can present challenges such as aligning design priorities and managing communication across disciplines. Balancing structural integrity with aesthetic or functional requirements frequently requires creative problem-solving and adaptability. Additionally, tight deadlines and evolving project specifications may demand quick analysis and revisions, making effective time management a valuable skill. Proactive communication and openness to feedback are key to ensuring successful project outcomes in this dynamic environment.

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As part of a small, hard-working, and accomplished team of experts, you will lead the structural design, analysis, and testing of aerospace structures and fluid systems for various spaceflight systems. You will share in the team's impact on all aspects of structural design, analysis, operation, and project management. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedication and detailed attention toward safe and repeatable spaceflight. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight.

Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • Perform detailed hand calculations and finite element (FE) analysis of primary and secondary aerospace structures
  • Conduct structural analysis of mechanical systems including umbilical systems, quick disconnects, valves, regulators, and electromechanical actuators
  • Document stress analysis to support release of engineering drawings and technical documentation
  • Make analytical predictions, implement test campaigns, and create reports in support of hardware qualifications
  • Support cross-functional teams with inputs for configuration development and trade studies
  • Improve enterprise analysis capabilities by developing process automation tools for model creation, optimization, strength checks, and analysis report generation
  • Collaborate effectively and constructively with team members from various disciplines, adjacent teams, and manufacturing personnel

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline (M.S. preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience with aircraft, spacecraft, and/or launch vehicle structures
  • Demonstrated proficiency with one or more FEA codes: Nastran, Optistruct, Ansys, Abaqus
  • Proficiency with nonlinear FEA tools (e.g., Ansys Mechanical, Abaqus)
  • Strong understanding of FEM modeling techniques (boundary conditions, bolted connections, contact, verification methods, mesh sensitivity, etc.)
  • Experience with development and/or qualification testing (test requirements, setup/configuration, test predictions, test conduct/monitoring, data analysis)
  • Familiarity with classical aerospace sizing methods (e.g., Bruhn, Niu, Roark's Formulas)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Ansys Motion or similar multi-body dynamics tools
  • Experience with LS-Dyna or similar explicit dynamics tool for energetic simulation
  • Demonstrated experience with metallic and/or composite structural layout, analysis, testing, and qualification methods
  • Experience analyzing mechanical components such as valves, regulators, quick disconnects, umbilical systems, and electromechanical actuators
  • Experience with AI-assisted coding using LLMs (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude) to accelerate script development and automation workflows
  • Experience with analyzing and dispositioning non-conformances
  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as Creo or CATIA V5
  • Experience with structural optimization methods and design sensitivity analysis
  • Familiarity with damage tolerance and fracture mechanics principles
