POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Groundskeeper

REPORTS TO: Land Stewardship Manager

At The Salvation Army, we are dedicated to "Doing the Most Good". We are made up of thousands of officers, soldiers, staff, volunteers, donors, and partners working together to holistically meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of our most vulnerable neighbors. We do this through programs designed to combat homelessness and hunger, provide safe spaces for kids after school and on the weekends, achieve and maintain sobriety, and give hope to the hopeless. The Salvation Army North and Central Illinois Division provides these services to people in need.

MISSION

The Salvation Army Wonderland Camp and Conference Center exists to support the ministry of the Salvation Army by providing the opportunity to experience Christ through focused programs in a natural, safe, camp conference environment.

OUTCOMES

Maintain the grounds so they are in clean and attractive condition.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Perform physically demanding work on a regular basis including working outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  2. Mow, trim, and maintain landscaping and grounds, including trash pick-ups, clearing brush and performing other general groundskeeping duties.
  3. Prepare firewood and campfire sites as necessary.
  4. Maintain all roads, sidewalks, trails, and outdoor surfaces.
  5. Remove snow and ice from designated areas and apply de-icing materials proactively and as needed.
  6. Operate, inspect, and maintain groundskeeping equipment and tools in a safe and responsible manner, reporting maintenance needs or equipment concerns promptly.
  7. Assist with seasonal projects, event preparation, facility improvements, and other camp projects as assigned.
  8. Provide support to other departments as operational needs require, including assisting with maintenance, housekeeping during high volume turnover days, program support, event set-up and other camp operations.
  9. Complete and maintain all required trainings and certifications.
  10. Attend meetings as assigned.
  11. Perform all other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Education: High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience: Previous experience in grounds care helpful.

JOB LIMITATIONS

  • This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
  • This individual will keep the Land Stewardship Manager informed on all critical issues related to their area of responsibility.
  • This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position is required to do physically demanding work on a regular basis including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing, digging, and operating equipment
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
  • In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use ground-keeping equipment and be able to operate a vehicle.
  • The work environment for this position includes an office and outdoor environment with a low to high noise level.
  • Will work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

  • This position reports to the Land Stewardship Manager.
  • In contacts related to this position's duties this individual acts as a representative of the Army and its mission.

PERFORMANCE MEASURES

  • This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.
