Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and hands-on Superintendent to oversee vessel and terminal operations at our Calvert facility. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant movement of cargo while managing crews and coordinating resources. The Superintendent will serve as a key operational leader, collaborating with internal teams, allocate labor and equipment, and maintain operational readiness. Responsibilities

Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce safety policies and procedures across all operations.
  • Lead or support investigations into safety or quality nonconformance's, including drafting root-cause and preventive action reports.
  • Ensure TRIR and LTIR targets are met or exceeded.

Operations Planning & Execution

  • Coordinate customers to schedule vessel arrivals.
  • Plan barge operations, ensuring labor, equipment, and gear are available in advance.
  • Oversee daily labor orders and adjust labor/equipment utilization as needed based on customer requirements.
  • Partner with internal teams to optimize cargo discharge metrics and vessel turnover.

Personnel Management & Development

  • Lead and mentor crews.
  • Conduct training, coaching, and performance management; identify high-potential talent for foreman and supervisory roles.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Oversee barge loading/unloading documentation, including material lists, inspections, and damage reports.
  • Ensure accurate entry of labor and cargo records to initiate billing and maintain operational transparency.

Customer & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Maintain strong relationships with customers, responding to inquiries and special requests.
  • Collaborate with department heads to ensure productivity, personnel management, and customer satisfaction targets are achieved.
  • Consistently meet or exceed location productivity goals.

  • Minimum 3 years of leadership or supervisory experience, with experience leading a terminal workforce strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of material handling operations and associated equipment.
  • Ability to interpret stowage/discharge plans, safety rules, and operating instructions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with operational tracking or scheduling software a plus.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Outdoor environment, including exposure to all weather conditions.
  • Pre-employment background check, drug screening, and physical (including 50 lbs. lift test) required.
  • Flexibility to work shift work.
  • May be required to climb ladders (50+ feet), work at heights and near water.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Salary Range: $68, 000 annually, plus up to a 10% annual bonus, based on experience
