What does a Statistical Process Control Engineer do?

A Statistical Process Control (SPC) Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining systems that monitor and control manufacturing processes using statistical methods. They analyze data to identify trends, reduce process variation, and improve product quality. SPC Engineers work closely with production teams to ensure processes remain stable, efficient, and in compliance with industry standards. Their role often involves training staff in SPC techniques and troubleshooting quality issues using data-driven approaches.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Statistical Process Control Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Statistical Process Control Engineer, you need a solid background in statistics, process engineering, and quality management, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with SPC software (such as Minitab or JMP), Six Sigma methodologies, and quality system certifications like ASQ are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualifications are vital to maintain product quality, optimize processes, and drive continuous improvement within manufacturing or production environments.

What is the difference between Statistical Process Control Engineer vs Quality Engineer?

AspectStatistical Process Control EngineerQuality Engineer
Primary FocusMonitoring and controlling manufacturing processes using statistical methodsEnsuring overall product quality through testing, inspection, and process improvements
CertificationsSix Sigma, Statistical Process Control (SPC) certificationsSix Sigma, Quality Management certifications (e.g., CQE)
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, process development labsQuality departments, production facilities
Industry UsageManufacturing, automotive, electronicsManufacturing, healthcare, aerospace

While both roles focus on improving product quality, the Statistical Process Control Engineer specializes in using statistical tools to monitor and control manufacturing processes, whereas the Quality Engineer oversees broader quality assurance activities, including testing and compliance. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

How does a Statistical Process Control Engineer typically collaborate with production and quality teams to drive process improvements?

A Statistical Process Control Engineer regularly works alongside both production and quality assurance teams to identify trends, troubleshoot issues, and implement data-driven improvements. They analyze real-time data from manufacturing processes, facilitate root cause analysis sessions, and communicate findings through reports or presentations. Collaboration often includes training team members on SPC tools and methodologies, as well as guiding them in using statistical techniques to monitor and control process variability. This cross-functional teamwork ensures that process adjustments are both technically sound and operationally practical, leading to sustained quality improvements.

Job description

Role Summary

We are seeking a skilled and hands-on Process Engineer to join our Production Engineering team, focused on developing, sustaining, and optimizing manufacturing processes across our production lines.

The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in process development, data analysis, and continuous improvement, along with the drive to expand expertise across disciplines. This role requires critical thinking, fast learning, and direct ownership of process performance in a high-paced production environment.

This is a floor-facing, high-impact role. You will work closely with Quality, Equipment, and Operations teams to ensure processes are capable, repeatable, and continuously improving.

Responsibilities

  • Support production operations across shifts, including remote or onsite escalation response as needed to minimize process-related downtime and yield loss
  • Develop, implement, and optimize production processes to ensure safety while maximizing Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and achieving world-class quality levels
  • Diagnose process failures and defects, drive corrective actions to root cause, and implement sustainable countermeasures to prevent recurrence
  • Monitor and reduce process variation using Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA); audit manufacturing processes to ensure product specifications and standards are consistently achieved
  • Develop data collection, visualization, and analysis tools to enable data-driven decision making and predictive insight into process performance
  • Champion continuous improvement projects to improve yield, capacity, and process capability, including cycle time reduction, scrap reduction, and labor efficiency gains
  • Develop and maintain FMEAs and Control Plans; analyze, develop, and implement Engineering Change Orders
  • Create and maintain Manufacturing Instructions, process routings, and related documentation, including rework procedures
  • Own process-level metrics, present performance data to engineering and operations stakeholders, and drive structured improvement initiatives
  • Maintain comprehensive process documentation and participate in Engineering Change Management

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Chemical, or Industrial Engineering, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience in a high-volume, highly automated manufacturing environment developing and improving processes
  • Proven experience driving process and OEE improvements through structured root cause analysis and continuous improvement methods
  • Proficiency in structured problem-solving methodologies such as DMAIC, 5 Whys, 8D, or Ishikawa
  • Knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and its application in manufacturing environments
  • Experience with data collection and analysis for process performance and development
  • Ability to lead cross-functional projects and support 24/7 operations during escalations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with data analysis and visualization tools such as Python, JMP, Minitab, Tableau, or similar
  • Familiarity with Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) and gauge R&R studies
  • Experience developing or improving HMIs or factory data systems such as Ignition, SCADA, or MES platforms
  • Knowledge of GD&T and its impact on process capability and manufacturability
  • Experience with power electronics or electromechanical assembly processes in energy, automotive, aerospace, or consumer electronics manufacturing
  • Experience with MES or factory data platforms for process monitoring, alarming, and analysis
  • Creative problem-solving mindset with a focus on faster, better, and more cost-effective solutions

Please note: This role requires working on-site 5 days a week. We do not offer hybrid or remote options.Â
