What is a stalwart?

Stalwarts were members of a faction within the United States Republican Party during the late 19th century, particularly active in the 1870s and 1880s. They were known for their strong support of the traditional party system, patronage, and the political machine led by Roscoe Conkling. The Stalwarts opposed civil service reform and were often at odds with the rival 'Half-Breed' faction, which supported merit-based government positions. The influence of the Stalwarts declined after the assassination of President James A. Garfield and the subsequent passage of the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a stalwart, and why are they important?
