Job description

Summary Valley County is seeking a master-level technician to serve as the Senior Mechanic within the Road & Bridge Department. This individual stands as the technical backbone of the shop, responsible for the advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, and complex rebuilding of a diverse fleet. From heavy construction machinery to essential county vehicles, the Senior Mechanic ensures that the equipment keeping Valley County moving remains safe, reliable, and high-performing.

This is a full-time position that offers stable year-round employment, robust public benefits, and a collaborative team environment. Typical Duties & Responsibilities The Senior Mechanic operates at the highest level of technical expertise. While journey-level mechanics handle routine repairs, the Senior Mechanic dives into the most challenging mechanical failures-independently performing complex overhauls of diesel engines, transmissions, and intricate hydraulic systems.

This professional interprets sophisticated digital diagnostics and complex schematics to map out efficient repair paths for motor graders, loaders, and snowplows. Beyond the wrench, this role serves as a vital mentor. The Senior Mechanic provides guidance to shop staff, offering technical assistance on unfamiliar equipment and assisting the Shop Foreman with workflow prioritization and parts procurement.

Whether in the controlled environment of the shop or responding to a high-consequence breakdown in a remote location during adverse weather, the Senior Mechanic makes critical decisions that impact the safety of the entire community. Safety and compliance are at the heart of this position. The Senior Mechanic certifies that every piece of machinery meets rigid performance standards through rigorous post-repair testing on county roadways.

By enforcing shop safety protocols and managing hazardous waste disposal, the Senior Mechanic maintains an environment of professional excellence. This is a role for a leader who takes pride in the longevity of the fleet and the professional growth of the mechanical team. Typical Qualifications Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Experience: At least five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in heavy equipment and diesel mechanics (or a equivalent mix of technical schooling and field work). Licensure: A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record is required.

Certifications: ASE certifications in Heavy or Medium-Heavy Truck and manufacturer-specific certifications are highly preferred. Expertise: Mastery of heavy-duty diesel engines, complex hydraulic circuitry, air brake systems, and advanced fleet diagnostic software. Leadership: A proven ability to lead, instruct, and organize the work of a mechanical team.

When applying, please provide a resume or detailed work history that shows your relevant training and experience. Benefits That Matter Valley County is committed to supporting our employees' health, happiness, and peace of mind. We are proud to offer the premier benefits package in the county, featuring: Retirement Security: Full membership in the Public Employee Retirement System of Idaho (PERSI).

Comprehensive Healthcare: Full Medical, Dental, Vision, and Prescription Drug coverage through Blue Cross of Idaho. Generous Paid Time Off: 176 hours of starting Personal Leave, plus 11 Paid Holidays and Bereavement Leave. Financial & Personal Wellness: Flexible Spending Accounts, Life Insurance, and an Employee Assistance Program.

Culture & Environment: A stable career path with advancement opportunities, a casual workplace culture, and the daily satisfaction of serving your community. Hiring is done without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, gender identity and expression, pregnancy, or genetics. In addition, preference may be given to veterans who qualify under state and federal laws and regulations.
