Job description

Due to continued growth, we are looking to add a Fire Sprinkler System Designer to our Worcester, MA team. In this role, you will design automatic fire sprinkler systems for commercial, industrial, institutional, healthcare, and residential projects in accordance with applicable codes, standards, project specifications, and company quality standards. You will collaborate with project managers, sales, field operations, customers, architects, engineers, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) to develop accurate, code-compliant, and cost-effective fire protection system designs from concept through project completion. Success in this role requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design wet, dry, pre-action, deluge, antifreeze, and specialty fire sprinkler systems.
  • Prepare complete construction drawings using AutoCAD, SprinkCAD, or other approved design software.
  • Perform hydraulic calculations in accordance with NFPA standards and project requirements.
  • Interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, and civil drawings.
  • Coordinate sprinkler layouts with other building systems to minimize field conflicts.
  • Review project specifications, contracts, and bid documents.
  • Ensure all designs comply with applicable editions of NFPA 13, NFPA 13R, NFPA 13D, NFPA 14, NFPA 20, NFPA 24, local building and fire codes, and insurance carrier requirements where applicable.
  • Prepare stock lists, material takeoffs, and fabrication drawings.
  • Submit permit drawings and respond to plan review comments.
  • Coordinate with project managers and field personnel throughout project execution.
  • Attend project coordination meetings as required.
  • Support field installation teams by providing technical guidance and resolving design issues.
  • Process design revisions resulting from change orders or field conditions.
  • Maintain organized project documentation and revision history.
  • Assist with value engineering opportunities while maintaining code compliance.
  • Meet project schedules and budget expectations.
  • Participate in quality assurance reviews.
  • Stay current on changes to fire protection codes, products, and design technologies.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum 3-5 years of fire sprinkler design experience (experience level may vary by position level).
  • Working knowledge of NFPA standards and fire protection principles.
  • Experience with hydraulic calculation software.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and industry-specific fire sprinkler design software.
  • Strong understanding of construction documents and building coordination.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and computer work.
  • Ability to occasionally visit construction sites.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and navigate active construction environments when necessary.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Primarily office-based with periodic field visits.
  • Construction site visits may require exposure to noise, dust, uneven surfaces, and varying weather conditions.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required during job site visits.

The salary for this role is $85,000 to $95,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications.
