Job description

Position Summary:

The Dryer Operator is responsible for operating the dryer and maintaining equipment used in drying and converting liquid colostrum to granular colostrum powder. The operator closely monitors all phases of the drying process to ensure the equipment is in proper working order and functioning appropriately from top to bottom.  The operator must remain vigilant in monitoring equipment for loose clamps and bolts, spray nozzle functionality, overheating motors and air valves/air hammers functioning properly.  The employee is responsible for adhering to production schedules and ensuring a steady flow of product is maintained at all times.  Maintaining a clean and safe work environment is a primary responsibility for the Dryer Operator.  Disassembling, hand cleaning, and reassembling equipment is a requirement as well.

Essential Functions

 

  1. Operates a colostrum spray dryer, monitors and adjusts and maintains equipment/settings to ensure the production of colostrum is running safely, efficiently and within specifications.
  2. Oversees and works within the packaging line at times and follows GMP standards while in packaging room.
  3. Occasionally operates the Evaporator.
  4. Takes steps to ensure product loss/waste is at a minimum.
  5. Maintains a clean working environment at all times.  Routinely engages in established clean-in-place (CIP) processes that include disassembling, hand cleaning and reassembling equipment used in the drying process.
  6. Washes silos weekly as each batch is completed.
  7. Fills, lifts and moves 44-55 lb. bags of dry colostrum powders.
  8. Operates forklift to transport product within the plant.
  9. Promote and comply with all safety standards of Sterling Technology to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned and when needed.

  1. Knowledge of the production process is required
  2. General knowledge of machines, production lines, and processing is required
  3. The ability to monitor, maintain and repair industrial equipment is required
  4. Previous production skills and experience preferred
  5. Safety and sanitization knowledge is required
  6. The ability to maintain company confidentiality is required
  7. The ability to remain on task and alert at all times is required

 

Electronic/Computer Skills

 

Automated controls, touchscreen, and electronic system monitoring is required.  Specific computer program experience is not required.

 

Physical Demands and Efforts

 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that could be expected of an employee in the performance of the essential functions of this job.  Incumbents will be expected to alternate between standing, and walking throughout the course of a 12 hour shift.  Must be capable of communicating with others both verbally and in writing; will be expected to use hands or fingers to manipulate equipment.  Frequently required to reach below and/or above waist level and below and/or above shoulders or head.  Frequently required to lift & carry up 55 lbs.  Frequently climbs stairs and ladders to get to elevated platforms.

Vision requirements include close, distance, and midrange vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus near and far frequently.     

 

Work Environment

 

The work environment is moderately noisy and includes running machines, frequent interruptions and moderate traffic.  Incumbents will have extended exposure to wet, dry, humid, very hot (temperatures reaching 150-160 degrees), cold, and/or hazardous conditions, including occasional entry into confined spaces.  Frequent manipulation of hazardous chemicals and knowledge of how to deal with these chemicals is required.
