Sports Insurance information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Sports Insurance, and why are they important?

To thrive in Sports Insurance, you need a solid understanding of insurance principles, risk assessment, and sports industry regulations, typically supported by a degree in business, finance, or a related field. Familiarity with insurance software, risk modeling tools, and relevant certifications such as Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) are often required. Strong negotiation, analytical thinking, and client relationship management skills help professionals stand out in this role. These abilities are crucial to accurately assess risks, tailor coverage to clients’ unique needs, and ensure effective communication between athletes, organizations, and insurers.

What is sports insurance?

Sports insurance is a specialized type of insurance designed to protect athletes, teams, coaches, and sporting organizations against risks associated with sporting activities. This coverage can include protection from injuries, accidents, liability claims, property damage, and event cancellations. Sports insurance policies can be tailored to cover amateur or professional athletes and can also include coverage for sporting equipment and facilities. It provides peace of mind by helping to manage the financial impact of unexpected events that may occur during sports participation or events.

What is the difference between Sports Insurance vs Sports Agent?

AspectSports InsuranceSports Agent
Required CredentialsInsurance licenses, certifications in risk managementSports management, negotiation, licensing
Work EnvironmentInsurance companies, risk assessment settingsSports teams, athlete representation
Employer & IndustryInsurance firms, risk management companiesSports agencies, athlete management firms

Sports Insurance focuses on assessing and managing risks related to sports activities, requiring insurance licenses and risk management skills. Sports Agents represent athletes, negotiate contracts, and handle endorsements, requiring sports management knowledge. While both roles are within the sports industry, Sports Insurance deals with risk coverage, whereas Sports Agents focus on athlete representation and career management.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in sports insurance, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in sports insurance often encounter challenges such as accurately assessing risk for athletes or sporting events, keeping up with rapidly changing regulations, and managing complex claims related to injuries or event cancellations. These challenges can be addressed by staying current with industry best practices, developing strong relationships with clients and underwriters, and continually updating knowledge about sports-specific liabilities. Collaboration with legal experts and risk managers also plays a vital role in navigating these complexities and ensuring clients receive comprehensive coverage.

Job description

As a Sports Tissue Representative within CONMED Sports Medicine, you will be responsible for driving adoption and accelerating growth of our advanced tissue portfolio, with a primary focus on BioBrace and MTF tissue products across your assigned territory.

This is a highly specialized, growth-oriented role designed for a sales professional who can create demand, influence surgeon behavior, and expand utilization of innovative biologic and tissue-based solutions. BioBrace is CONMED’s fastest-growing global product and a major strategic priority for our business, making this one of the most important commercial opportunities in our Sports Medicine portfolio.

In this role, you will partner closely with surgeons, clinical teams, full-line sales representatives, and internal stakeholders to build physician champions, create new opportunities, and establish BioBrace and MTF as preferred solutions in target accounts. Success requires strong clinical credibility, disciplined execution, and an ownership mindset.

Successful Performance Will Be Measured By

  • Achievement of BioBrace-specific sales quota and territory growth objectives
  • Expansion of BioBrace and MTF utilization across existing and new accounts
  • Successful addition of BioBrace to local and regional contracts (ASC, hospital, IDN)
  • Consistent execution within established BioBrace pricing and commercial strategy
  • Development of strong physician champions and sustainable product pull-through
  • Ability to become a credible, persuasive, ethical, and trusted advisor to customers and internal partners

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive adoption, utilization, and revenue growth of BioBrace and MTF tissue products across the assigned territory
  • Build and develop surgeon champions to accelerate product awareness, trial, and long-term conversion
  • Identify, prospect, and convert new business opportunities in target accounts, with a strong focus on market expansion
  • Partner closely with MDMs and full-line sales representatives to align account strategy, support case coverage, and maximize product pull-through
  • Provide hands-on case support and clinical guidance to ensure successful product use and customer confidence
  • Lead product education, in-service training, and clinical discussions with surgeons, OR staff, and key decision-makers
  • Execute territory-specific market development plans to expand penetration in priority accounts and segments
  • Support local and regional access efforts through value messaging, pricing alignment, and contract execution
  • Analyze territory performance, identify growth gaps, and implement targeted strategies to improve penetration and consistency
  • Maintain strong relationships with key opinion leaders, clinical stakeholders, and economic decision-makers

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
  • 5+ years of medical device, sports medicine, ortho biologics, or tissue sales experience required
  • Market development experience preferred

Key Competencies

  • Market development and opportunity creation
  • Clinical credibility and product expertise
  • Strategic account management
  • Execution and accountability
  • Collaboration and influence without authority
  • Territory ownership mindset
  • Proven success introducing and growing new or innovative products in a competitive environment
  • Strong clinical acumen with the ability to engage credibly in procedural and surgical discussions
  • Demonstrated ability to create demand, influence adoption, and develop new business opportunities
  • Proven track record of collaboration across sales teams and cross-functional partners
  • Self-starter with a strong ownership mindset and ability to operate independently

Success Profile

The ideal candidate will:

  • Consistently grow BioBrace and tissue revenue within the territory
  • Expand the footprint of BioBrace and MTF in both existing and competitive accounts
  • Build strong partnerships with full-line sales representatives, MDMs, and clinical stakeholders
  • Create momentum through education, case support, and surgeon advocacy
  • Demonstrate ownership of territory strategy, execution, and results
