A Special Project Manager oversees unique or non-recurring projects that fall outside the scope of regular operations within an organization. They are responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing projects that often require cross-departmental collaboration and innovative problem-solving. Their duties include setting project objectives, managing timelines and budgets, allocating resources, and ensuring that the project meets its goals. Special Project Managers often handle high-priority initiatives, process improvements, or strategic business changes. Their role is crucial in driving organizational growth and achieving specific business outcomes.

How does a special project manager typically balance multiple high-priority projects simultaneously?

Special Project Managers often oversee several complex initiatives at once, requiring strong organizational and time management skills. To successfully balance these projects, they prioritize tasks based on urgency and impact, utilize project management software, and delegate responsibilities where appropriate. Regular communication with stakeholders and team members ensures alignment on goals and deadlines, while flexibility allows them to adapt to shifting priorities. This dynamic environment can be challenging, but it also provides opportunities to develop leadership and problem-solving skills.

To thrive as a Special Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, analytical thinking, and a background in business or a related field, often supported by a bachelor's degree and experience managing complex initiatives. Familiarity with project management tools like Microsoft Project, Asana, or Trello, and certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2, is typically required. Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for coordinating diverse teams and navigating shifting project goals. These abilities are essential for successfully delivering unique or high-impact projects on time and within budget, while maintaining stakeholder satisfaction.

Job description

Are you interested in being part of an innovative team that supports Westinghouse's mission to provide clean energy solutions? At WECTEC Staffing Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Westinghouse Electric Company LLC, we recognize that our employees are our most valuable asset and we seek to identify, attract and recruit the most qualified talent while recognizing and encouraging the value of diversity in the global workplace.

About the role: We are hiring on behalf of our client. We are seeking a Project Manager to support E&C's engagement across gas project development activities at our Federal Hub efforts — from early-stage technical assessments through construction readiness and project execution. Immediately focus will be on project reporting development and implementation. This is a hands-on, high-impact role operating at the intersection of Engineering, Construction, and Integrated Supply Chain. This is an onsite role and will be a 1-year contract.

Key Responsibilities:

· Support E&C participation in Technology Review, Preliminary Engineering phases, and contracting for active hub gas development projects

· Coordinate E&C SME inputs for site configuration reviews, constructability assessments, and balance-of-plant evaluations including gas and electrical interconnection and switchyard scopes

· Track development and regulatory milestones, identifying and flagging construction-phase dependencies early.

· Maintain project schedules, cost benchmarks, and cashflow models to support project sanction decisions

· Manage the E&C risk register for hub projects, tracking scope, schedule, cost, and constructability risks across active work streams

· Manage progress reporting to the Owner, including schedule status, cost performance, risk exposure, and milestone tracking — ensuring reporting is accurate, timely, and decision-ready

Qualifications:

· Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field

· 5–10 years of experience in energy project development or large capital construction

· Demonstrated experience in project controls and schedule development for gas generation or major capital projects

· Experience managing Owner-level reporting obligations, including progress reports with schedule, cost, and risk content

· Familiarity with EPC/EPCM project delivery models and contractor bid evaluation

· Experience with combined cycle or simple cycle gas development projects

· Familiarity with interconnection processes and associated E&C scope possible effects
