Job Summary
The Graphic Designer (Temporary) is a part-time, fiscal-year appointment reporting to the Lead Graphic Designer. The Graphic Designer (Temporary) works closely with the Lead Graphic Designer and other Marketing and Communications staff as assigned to develop designs that inform and inspire for print, digital and various platforms. This position requires at least two days of on-site work.
The Graphic Designer (Temporary) revises existing collateral marketing materials, including but not limited to catalogs, flyers, brochures, magazines, annual reports, posters, business forms and schedules. With keen attention to detail, the Graphic Designer (Temporary) supports the development of projects from concept to final design. The position will play a collaborative role in strategic marketing and communications efforts to tell a cohesive and compelling Southwest story in alignment with the mission and vision of the College.
Job Duties
  • Maximize the organization's reach through dynamic creative that enhances the college's print, digital and various media assets.
  • Design duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Charts/infographics
    • Brochures, flyers, posters, and business cards
    • Campus signage
    • Creative elements for magazines and other publications
    • Digital templates (PowerPoint, online stationery and forms, etc.)
    • Social media graphics, including memes, headers and infographics
  • Convert designs and print collateral into digital assets
  • Work with internal and external printers and other vendors throughout the production process to ensure a quality product, as needed
  • Fabricate signage and other print jobs as assigned
  • Additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Graphic Design or related field
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in graphic design and production; excellent communication, graphic design and production skills
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with Mac hardware and all current versions of Adobe Creative Cloud, including InDesign,
  • Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightroom; and experience with Microsoft Office applications (word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Understanding of graphic techniques in the printing industry and core layout and design elements as typography, contrast, alignment, perspective and proximity
  • Well-versed in photo editing and illustration production

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design or related field

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Multi-task and work independently with minimal supervision,
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written forms
  • Respond to customer needs with speed, agility and excellence
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Communicate and work with various groups connected to the college (faculty, staff, students, and the public)
  • Consistently create dynamic, engaging artwork that reflects current trends and appropriate styles
  • Remain current on graphic design trends, software and tools
  • Work with a team, as well as alone
  • Align all designs with Southwest branding and marketing standards
  • Design and produce pieces for prepress on a Macintosh, especially using InDesign (color correcting abilities are a plus)
  • Design and create basic .gif animations for online ad banners and websites,
  • Translate basic print design components to web-ready formats
  • Ability to work in 4-color and spot-color production of materials
  • Pre-press knowledge and file preparation
  • Learn how to employ emerging design and animation software to elevate ongoing projects
