Portland Community College's Art, Humanities, Communication and Design (AHCD) Academic and Career Pathway seeks a full-time one year temporary Instructional Support Technician II (IST II) in Art. This position will be located a PCC's Rock Creek Campus
The ART IST II position will support the following Art areas:Ceramics (primarily)Art Gallery, Painting, Drawing (secondary as needed)
The Pathway welcomes students from diverse backgrounds and abilities to study and develop their skills in preparation for a variety of careers and/or transfer to four-year institutions. The IST works with faculty, administrative staff, casual staff, student workers and Pathway leadership to enhance our students' learning experience by ensuring classes and facilities are well supported at the Rock Creek campus. They liaise with a variety of stakeholders to perform a full range of support duties. ISTs work independently, responding to a variety of situations. Successful ISTs have the ability to make sound decisions regarding whether they are able to provide appropriate support or seek assistance from faculty, the Faculty Department Chair, administrative assistant or the Arts and Design Program Dean. The scope of this may include developing studio schedules, onboarding casual workers, and providing ongoing studio support. Remote work and the use of technology to perform duties off site may be needed.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Two years of post-secondary education in a specific technical discipline appropriate to the instructional support (Note: Relevant experience may substitute for the post-secondary education requirement on a year-for-year basis.)
Two years of experience supporting studio art activities in the technical area are required
Must have proven communications skills adequate to assist students in understanding the work they are to perform and ability to lead others.
Success Criteria:
Knowledge of Ceramics media and safety procedures (kiln firing, glaze mixing, dry material storage, ventilation system, chemicals etc.)
Proficient with maintenance and minor repairs to studio equipment such as potter's wheels, kilns, extruders, scales, slab roller, ball mill, pug mill.
Experience and knowledge of handling and mixing glazes.
Inventory control and ordering of ceramics materials and supplies.
Coordinate and schedule student and casual workers.
Coordinate with the PCC web team and Art department to post art department social media platforms and web page images of student artwork and links to upcoming events.
Ability to work evening and weekend hours as needed
Knowledge of working with power tools and equipment (drills, saws, etc).
Ability to provide support and mentorship for students during class times and open lab time
Experience in studio ceramics art, and/or technical courses such as woodshop, welding, or fabrication
Demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion
Nature and Scope of Work
Supports studio art classes under the technical direction of one or more members of the faculty or an instructional administrator, prepares multiple art laboratories or classrooms following specified instructions. Assists with the design, construction and/or fabrication of equipment, modules, and experiments that will be used in the laboratories or classrooms to assist the instructor in the delivery of desired instructional outcomes. Work is performed relatively independently subject to supervisory review and direction. The IST II may provide work direction to work-study, student helpers and casual employees and coordinate their activities.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities (includes some or all of the following)
1. Works in consultation with faculty to design, construct, modify, maintain, and troubleshoot ceramics studio equipment and facilities used for instructional purposes. Provides general assistance to students, faculty, and staff to ensure proper orientation to safety protocols and the appropriate use of studio equipment, tools, materials, and personal protective equipment.
2.Coordinates and supports daily operations of the ceramic's studio, including establishing and maintaining procedures for the safe use of equipment, supplies, materials, and machinery. Provides technical support and troubleshooting for ceramics equipment, including electric and gas kilns, potter's wheels, slab rollers, pug mills, and related studio equipment.
3.Maintains, operates, and troubleshoots electric kilns, including diagnosing firing issues, changing elements and relays, rewiring components, loading and unloading kilns, and conducting firings. Maintains, cleans, loads, fires, and unloads gas kilns, including soda and raku kilns. Maintains Raku kilns and related equipment to support faculty and student instruction.
4.Performs routine maintenance and upkeep of ceramics equipment, including cleaning and adjusting slab rollers, maintaining and lubricating pug mills, and cleaning, maintaining, and troubleshooting potter's wheels. Identifies equipment issues, performs minor repairs when appropriate, and coordinates additional repairs or service as needed.
5.Supports ceramics material management, including tracking, ordering, inventorying, and maintaining glaze materials, clay supplies, and studio resources. Mixes and maintains studio glazes, develops new glaze formulations, conducts glaze testing, and ensures materials are available to support instructional needs. Tracks and inventories bookstore clay supplies and supports continued development and implementation of clay recycling processes.
6.Provides technical assistance and instructional support to students during open studio hours, including helping students develop techniques, safely operate equipment, use materials appropriately, and maintain a clean and organized workspace. Oversees open studio operations and ensures adherence to studio procedures and safety expectations.
7.Provides work direction and oversight for student employees, work-study students, and casual staff. Coordinates schedules to ensure adequate studio coverage, trains employees on studio procedures and equipment use, monitors performance, and communicates concerns to the appropriate supervisor or faculty.
8.Orients new faculty and staff to ceramics studio procedures, policies, equipment operation, safety protocols, and maintenance practices. Provides training and support related to the safe use and care of studio equipment and materials.
9.Orders departmental supplies, equipment, and instructional materials while following College purchasing guidelines. Tracks expenditures and maintains inventory records for ceramics materials, equipment, tools, and supplies.
10.Maintains records related to studio operations, including equipment maintenance, materials acquisition, inventory, repairs, firing schedules, and distribution of supplies and resources. Maintains documentation and safety records, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS), as required.
11.May be required to handle, store, and dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) protocols and College safety procedures.
12.Provides for the general cleanliness, organization, and security of the ceramics studio and related work areas. Performs end-of-term studio shutdown procedures, including equipment maintenance, cleaning, material organization, inventory updates, and preparation of the studio for future instructional use. Reports maintenance, safety, and facility concerns as they occur.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
Work pressure, disturbances of workflow and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Changes in the performance environment require occasional upgrading of skills. Working conditions may be somewhat disagreeable requiring occasional exposure to safety hazards, noise and temperature extremes. Some learned physical skills are required. Physical effort such as frequent standing, walking and lifting; guiding and/or carrying of lightweight materials or equipment; occasional periods of sustained effort.

How We Determine Initial Salary PlacementThe first two steps of the range are: $49,386.00 and $50,862.00 per year. Higher salary placement may be available based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
