What does a sonar tech do?

A Sonar Technician, often abbreviated as Sonar Tech, is responsible for operating and maintaining sonar equipment used to detect, identify, and track underwater objects, such as submarines and mines. They analyze sonar readings, interpret acoustic data, and ensure the proper functioning of sonar systems on naval vessels or submarines. Sonar Techs play a crucial role in navigation, search and rescue, and ensuring the safety and security of their vessel by providing vital underwater situational awareness.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sonar tech?

To thrive as a Sonar Technician, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of acoustics, electronics, and troubleshooting, typically supported by technical training or military certification. Familiarity with sonar systems, signal processing software, and diagnostic equipment is essential. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work well under pressure are key soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the accurate interpretation of sonar data and maintaining operational readiness in challenging environments.

What are some common challenges faced by sonar techs, and how can they be effectively managed on the job?

Sonar Technicians often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex sonar data, maintaining sensitive electronic equipment in demanding environments, and troubleshooting system malfunctions under time constraints. Effective management of these challenges involves strong attention to detail, ongoing technical training, and close collaboration with other technicians and operators. Proactively performing preventive maintenance and staying updated on the latest sonar technologies also help Sonar Techs ensure reliable system performance during critical missions.

What is the difference between Sonar Tech vs Marine Electrician?

Job description

Job Summary:
Sonar is driving the future of agent-centric software development and is seeking a Partner Engineer to serve as a technical architect of their partner ecosystem. This role involves designing and building high-quality integrations with leading DevOps, CI/CD, and AI-assisted developer platform partners to support Sonar's ecosystem strategy and drive user adoption.
Responsibilities:
• Act as the primary technical expert for Sonar’s technology partners, translating their capabilities into integration and GTM opportunities for Sonar.
• Identify integration options between Sonar and its tech partners. Construct reference architectures. Assess feasibility of custom technical integrations with partners if necessary. Present partner integration requirements to Sonar’s Product Management and Engineering functions, and influence Sonar’s partner integration roadmap as required.
• Design, architect, prototype, and demonstrate integration-based solutions with Sonar’s products and those from Sonar’s technical partners, including DevOps and CI/CD providers (e.g., GitHub, GitLab, Atlassian, Azure DevOps), IDE platforms (e.g., VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, Cognition), agentic coding providers (e.g., Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot, Google DeepMind), and vibe coding platforms (e.g., Vercel, Replit, Lovable).
• Evangelize these integrations by producing technical content, including integration guides, blog posts, and demos. Conduct joint webinars with partners and speak at industry and partner events.
• Assist partners (and customers, as required) with integration deployments and implementations, facilitating interactions between partners and Sonar’s Product Management and Engineering functions.
Qualifications:
Required:
• 5+ years of experience working in a partner-facing or sales-facing technical role, such as Partner Engineering, Solutions Engineering, Sales Engineering, or Developer Advocacy.
• Strong understanding of (and passion for!) agentic software development, including MCP and CLI integration methods and plugin models for leading agentic code providers (e.g., Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Cognition).
• 5+ years of experience in software engineering with the ability to architect, design and develop software in languages such as Java, TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, or Go. Proficiency with REST APIs, GraphQL, webhooks, and authentication standards (OAuth, SAML), including experience designing or consuming complex APIs is a strong plus.
• Practitioner proficiency with DevOps and CI/CD tools (e.g., GitHub, GitLab, Atlassian, Azure DevOps, Jenkins) and IDE platforms (e.g., VS Code, JetBrains), particularly with respect to their integration and plugin frameworks.
• Familiarity with AI/ML platforms (e.g., Databricks, AWS Bedrock, AWS SageMaker, Google Cloud Vertex AI, and Azure AI Foundry) including experience with marketplace listings, partner directories, and positioning developer tools within cloud-native AI workflows is a plus.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create compelling technical content and explain complex integration architectures to both business and technical stakeholders. Demonstrable track record of thought leadership through published content and speaking engagements.
• Strong business acumen, and adept at discussing go-to-market strategy with business leaders.
