Job description


As the Psychology Department Student Assistant, you'll support the department's research participant system, day-to-day operations, student organizations, and public communications. The role combines administrative coordination, technical system management, and content creation, and gives you hands-on experience with the infrastructure that supports psychological research and academic departments.
Responsibilities
Supervision & Assignment of Work:
  • You report to the department chair, Dr. Tracy Litzinger, who is your direct supervisor for this position. All of your work assignments come through this individual, including projects that originate with other faculty members. If another faculty member asks you directly for help, refer them to Dr. Litzinger rather than taking on the task yourself. This protects your hours and keeps you from being pulled in competing directions.
  • You will be assigned an ongoing project by Dr. Litzinger. During scheduled hours when nothing time-sensitive is pending, work on that project rather than waiting for direction. Assigned hours are primarily day-time working hours.

Expectations:
  • Arrive on time for all scheduled shifts and work the full scheduled hours
  • Notify Dr. Litzinger in advance of any absence, late arrival, or needed schedule change - advance notice, not after the fact
  • Check and respond to your department email at least once per scheduled shift
  • Complete assigned tasks by their stated deadlines; if you can't meet a deadline, say so before it passes
  • Follow through on tasks to completion without needing repeated reminders
  • Ask questions when instructions are unclear rather than guessing or leaving work unfinished
  • Keep a brief log of your weekly hours worked and tasks completed, and submit it to Dr. Litzinger on a regular basis
  • Save personal coursework, phone use, and other non-work activities for designated breaks
  • Treat student, participant, program, and faculty information as confidential at all times
  • Continuing in this position depends on meeting these expectations. Dr. Litzinger will raise any performance concerns with you directly, and repeated failure to meet expectations may result in reduced hours or removal from the position.
Research Participation & Sona Systems:
  • Set up research studies, participants, and researchers in Sona Systems, coordinating with Dr. Litzinger and the Sona Systems manager, Dr. Keith Wylie
  • Track research participants and monitor credit fulfillment
  • Coordinate and collate research participant schedules
  • Manage and analyze participant pool activity and engagement using system reports
  • Develop and carry out strategies to increase research participation
  • Serve as the first point of contact for FAQs and technical issues, and work with the Sona Systems customer service as needed
Department Communications & Social Media:
  • Maintain and post regularly to the department's academic and social media accounts (e.g., Canvas, www.flagler.edu, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn), coordinating with Dr. Litzinger
  • Draft and schedule content highlighting student and faculty accomplishments, research opportunities, department events, alumni news, and program milestones
  • Capture photos and short video content at department events
  • Maintain shared content calendar, folder, and track basic engagement metrics
  • Help maintain student and alumni databases
  • Monitor and update the department web page to keep information current
  • Follow College brand, accessibility, and privacy guidelines in all content, including FERPA-protected information and photo consent
Student Organization Support:
  • Assist our Honor Societies (Alpha Kappa Delta, Alpha Phi Sigma, Psi Chi) and The Psychology Club committees as needed with event planning, logistics, and setup
  • Help coordinate and publicize meetings, inductions, speakers, and other organization events through department channels
  • Support communication between student organization officers, faculty advisors, and the department
  • Assist with membership tracking, sign-in sheets, and post-event follow-up
Department Operations & Faculty Support:
  • Copy, scan, and collate materials for faculty and instructors
  • Check for and retrieve copy room and mail room documents for faculty
  • Run campus errands as needed
  • Assist with general department supplies, organization, and recordkeeping
  • Oversee Riberia Street lab needs, supplies, and upkeep, and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly
Peer Support:
  • Provide limited peer tutoring and informal advising to psychology students as assigned

Qualifications
  • Current Behavioral Sciences Major/Minor
  • Third or fourth year student
  • Reliable, organized, and able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong written communication skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other technical systems used within the Department (e.g., Sona Systems)
  • Comfortable with web tools and social media platforms; basic photo/video editing (e.g., Canva)
  • Schedule coordinates best with day-time working hours and most faculty schedules
  • Discretion with confidential student, participant, program, and faculty information
