Solidworks Inspection information

What is a solidworks inspector?

A SolidWorks Inspector is a professional who uses SolidWorks Inspection software to create and manage inspection reports, ensuring product dimensions and quality meet specifications. They typically analyze CAD models, generate detailed inspection documentation, and may hold certifications in quality assurance or metrology. This role often requires familiarity with GD&T and measurement tools.

Is solidworks inspection necessary?

SolidWorks Inspection is a specialized tool used to streamline the creation and management of inspection reports and quality documentation. While not always mandatory, it helps ensure accuracy and consistency in quality control processes, especially in manufacturing environments that require precise measurement and compliance with standards. Proficiency in SolidWorks Inspection can enhance a technician's ability to perform efficient inspections and maintain product quality.

What jobs can you get with a SolidWorks certification?

SolidWorks Inspection certification can qualify you for roles such as quality inspector, manufacturing engineer, or CAD technician, where you use SolidWorks software to create, review, and validate technical drawings and inspection reports. These positions often require knowledge of GD&T, measurement tools, and quality standards in manufacturing environments.

What is the difference between Solidworks Inspection vs CAD Technician?

AspectSolidworks InspectionCAD Technician
CertificationsSolidworks Certification, Inspection-specific trainingAutoCAD, Solidworks, or other CAD software certifications
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, quality control, engineering firmsDesign offices, engineering departments, manufacturing
Primary FocusCreating inspection reports, verifying part dimensionsDesigning, drafting, and modifying CAD models

Solidworks Inspection specialists focus on quality assurance by generating inspection reports and verifying part dimensions using Solidworks Inspection software. CAD Technicians primarily work on designing and modifying CAD models across various projects. While both roles require Solidworks skills, Solidworks Inspection emphasizes quality control, whereas CAD Technicians focus on design and drafting tasks.

How much does solidworks inspection cost?

SolidWorks Inspection is a software tool used for quality control and measurement documentation, and its cost varies depending on the license type and user needs. Typically, a perpetual license can range from $2,000 to $4,000, with annual maintenance fees of around 20% of the license cost. Pricing may also depend on whether the user opts for a standalone or network license, and additional modules or training can affect the overall expense.

Job description

Job Title: Metrology Engineer

Job Description

The Metrology Engineer develops, maintains, and improves automated inspection programs to ensure that complex manufactured parts consistently meet stringent quality standards. This role supports production by troubleshooting and optimizing inspection systems on the manufacturing floor, performs precise measurements and testing for new products and R&D projects, and collaborates closely with engineering teams to refine prints, design inspection fixtures, and enhance measurement processes. The Metrology Engineer also generates detailed quality reports, including capability studies and data analyses, to validate inspection accuracy and support continuous improvement initiatives, while contributing to capital projects and equipment procurement decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Create, maintain, and optimize automated inspection programs to ensure parts meet all defined quality and dimensional requirements.
  • Support manufacturing operations by troubleshooting inspection systems on the production floor and driving improvements to increase reliability and throughput.
  • Perform measurements and testing for new products, R&D projects, and customer-specific requirements using a variety of metrology tools and automated equipment.
  • Work with engineering teams to review technical drawings and prints, interpret GD&T, and develop appropriate inspection fixtures and methods.
  • Improve measurement processes by evaluating current inspection strategies, implementing best practices, and introducing advanced metrology techniques.
  • Generate quality reports, including capability studies and data analyses, to validate inspection accuracy and demonstrate process capability.
  • Support capital projects by researching, explaining, and evaluating new inspection and measurement equipment, including next-generation 3D technologies.
  • Identify and recommend next-generation metrology equipment such as OGP smart scopes, optical CMMs, and coordinate metrology systems to enhance inspection capabilities.
  • Program and configure automated video equipment, CMMs, and other measurement systems to meet production and quality requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams in a highly automated manufacturing environment to ensure inspection systems align with product and process needs.
  • Interpret data collected from inspection and testing activities, perform statistical and analytical evaluations, and clearly present findings to stakeholders.
  • Use 3D software and analytical tools such as SolidWorks, Minitab, or JMP to support measurement analysis, capability studies, and process improvements.
  • Apply configuration management principles to inspection programs and measurement systems to maintain consistency, traceability, and revision control.
  • Participate in onsite training and knowledge sharing to support continuous improvement and skill development within the team.
  • Travel as needed to domestic and global facilities, vendors, and training centers to support equipment implementation, training, and collaborative projects.

Essential Skills

  • 3–5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment programming automated video equipment, CMMs, or other measurement equipment.
  • Strong technical background with an engineering mindset focused on making systems run faster and more efficiently.
  • Hands-on experience with metrology, inspection measurement, and testing programs in a production environment.
  • Proficiency in CMM programming and coordinate measuring machine operation, including automated equipment setup and optimization.
  • Solid understanding of GD&T and the ability to interpret engineering drawings and prints for inspection planning.
  • Experience with vision systems and automated inspection platforms, including Zone 3 or similar technologies.
  • Inspection and testing experience with the ability to validate accuracy and repeatability of measurement systems.
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, and implement next-generation 3D metrology equipment such as OGP smart scopes and optical CMMs.
  • Experience with configuration management practices related to inspection programs and measurement systems.
  • Ability to interpret collected data, perform analyses, and effectively present and communicate results to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with 3D software and analytical tools; SolidWorks, Minitab, or JMP is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, with strong skills in Excel for data analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to sit or stand for at least 90 consecutive minutes without sensory deprivation or paralysis of the limbs.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to domestic and global facilities, vendors, and training centers as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Python or similar scripting languages to support automation, data analysis, or inspection program development.
  • Familiarity with other metrology and inspection platforms such as PC-DMIS, Zeiss systems, Micro-VU Vertex, and configuration management software.
  • Experience with Java or comparable programming languages for integrating or customizing automated inspection solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and direct technical decisions, acting as a problem solver rather than only a problem finder.
  • Exposure in coordinating metrology and 3D measurement techniques.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to drive continuous improvement in measurement and inspection processes.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams.
  • Adaptability to learn new platforms, tools, and equipment in a rapidly evolving, highly automated environment.
